Muttahida Qaumi Movement has announced, yet again, that it is leaving the Federal Government, Provincial Government and the coveted position of Governor Sindh. This time the announced reason for parting ways has been the way MQM has been treated by the PPP in elections of Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s two seats in Karachi. According to yet again “former” Federal Minister, Dr. Farooq Sattar, PPP had repeatedly pressurized the MQM to give up one seat from Karachi. He alleged that Interior Minister Rehman Malik was constantly in touch with the Karachi and London Rabita Committees and kept forcing them to give up the seat.

Not to miss the opportunity to play to the media which has been again and again predicting the departure of PPP from Federal Government, Farooq Sattar blamed the government for not protecting its workers and leaders, stating that more than 300 MQM workers had been killed under the present government.

All this because of two seats in AJK assembly doesn’t seem to meet the eye. With a number of “analysts” beginning to hope for yet another demise of the PPP, they were skeptical if MQM shall hold true to its stance. Geo TV along with all other news channels continued marathon analysis sessions to find out about the “Buhraani Siyasi Kaifiyat” and “Siyasi Hulchal”.

The best analysis was that of veteran journalist, Nazeer Laghari, who said that with general elections just one and half years in future, the MQM cannot afford to be seen standing next to the government and has to show that it is true to its stance of standing with the masses. He also said that they need to differentiate in order to gain votes else they can be big losers.

With President Asif Zardari visiting the UK, a meeting with MQM head honcho, Altaf Hussain Bhai, cannot be ruled out. Will Zardari charm Altaf Bhai or will the real charmer of London hold his fort, only time will tell.

With the federal budget passed and the PPP having a support of the PML-Q for the time being, one may not expect “winds of change” to start blowing anytime soon. Whether they join hands with PML-N and PTI/JI in showing their street power to destabilize the government is something which can be a potential concern, however, it may not be as tangible a threat now as it was 6 months ago.
