Deconstructing Husain Haqqani – by Aamir Mughal and Sarah Khan
From the days of General Zia ul Haq, the Islamofacist dictator of Pakistan, one name never seems to die out. Like a roach, it has survived the test of time and come back to haunt the scene once again in the form of Husain Haqqani.
Let’s have a quick look at Mr Haqqani’s [currently the Ambassador of Pakistan to the USA] questionable past while he was part and parcel of the Mullah Military Axis (Generals plus Jamaat-e-Islamic plus Jihadis), known at one stage as IJI, which is riddled with scandals and corruption.
The following is one of the credentials of Mr Haqqani as listed in his profile published in the Pakistan Embassy’s online portal:
“Organized the parliamentary election campaign in 1988 for the IJI alliance led by Mr. Nawaz Sharif.”
Guess who formed the IJI? Who distributed illegal money to Messrs Nawaz Sharif, Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi etc and their advisers? Indeed, it was Pakistan’s ISI which created the pro-Mullah IJI. Haqqani was chosen as its adviser.
A detailed CV of Husaain Haqqani is provided at the end. [1]
General Zia-ul-Haq’s martial law, the darkest period in Pakistan’s history, served as an ideal nursery for creatures such as Hussain Haqqani.
With the jihadi brainwashing on the one hand and erosion of academic freedom on the other, university campuses (once temples of learning and enlightenment) were turned into centres of rowdyism and repositories of deadly weapons. Students belonging to various religious, regional and ethnic groups, particularly the Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba (the student wing of Jamat-e-Islami – IJT), played havoc with educational institutions. Liberal professors were in particular a target of the victimization carried out in that period. Members of the IJT launched a concerted campaign against all professors known for their liberal views.
The situation was no different in Karachi where Hussain Haqqani was a known activist of the IJT. He was one of the first student leaders who introduced Klashankov culture in mainstream universities of Pakistan, being surrounded by armed bodyguards at Karachi university campus.
Guns boomed at the Karachi University Campus for the first time in 1979 when, according to Imran Shirvanee, Raja Javed, a supporter of IJT, used a sten gun ‘to tackle the opposition.’ When the pen and free expression are throttled, the only means open to tackle opposition is a firearm. At that time, the IJT was the ruling party in Karachi University politics with Hussain Haqqani, Raja Javed was his close aide.
Haqqani is notorious in Pakistani politics for his lack of political commitment and affiliation. He is the classic example of a ‘lota’, a derogatory term in Pakistan politics for a fair-weather friend.
The former Far Eastern Economic Review correspondent was the media advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Nawaz Sharif when Benazir Bhutto was the Prime Minister of Pakistan {1988-1990}.
In his capacity as the media advisor to IJI, the Islamofacist alliance which was also offered support by Osama Bin Laden, Haqqani developed and spread hateful and misleading propaganda against Benazir Bhutto and her mother Mrs Nusrat Bhutto.
It has been recently revealed by an old colleague of Haqqani (Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad) that Hussain Haqqani forged a letter in the name of Benazir Bhutto in 1990 to her Harvard friend and then member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Peter Galbraith. The forged letter was claimed to be written by Mrs Bhutto in which she had requested the USA and India to act against Pakistan Army and Pakistan’s interests.
Consistent with his politically expedient (lota) nature, Haqqani switched sides to serve caretaker Prime Minister Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi in 1990, and then switched back again to serve Sharif when he was elected Prime Minister.
In 1992, he was sent to Sri Lanka as Pakistan’s High Commissioner.
On the eve of Nawaz Sharif’s dismissal on 18 April 1993, he jumped the sinking ship and joined President Ghulam Ishaq Khan’s bandwagon. Immediately, he was rewarded by being made a special assistant to the caretaker Prime Minister Mir Balakh Sher Mazari with the rank of Minister of State. Asked by BBC if he now deserved a mention in the Guinness Book of Records for switching loyalties so often, his reply was classic: “I was always with the President.’” [2]
Right from this student politics with the Jamaat’s student wing, the dreaded Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba, at Karachi University there is much that Mr Haqqani is answerable for.
The violence at the university and the brutal suppression of free speech that the IJT imposed on the campus in those days was done with Mr Haqqani very much an active player. Many still say that he was the architect of the IJT’s policy of using brute force to suppress opposition opinion.
We next saw him on PTV (Pakistan Television) – which was a kind of a launching pad for him -during the 1985 partyless elections. It was an election which destroyed Pakistan’s politics in more ways than one and much that we see wrong with Pakistan’s politics today dates back to that election. It was because of the destructive potential of the election that every liberal and progressive party in the country boycotted those elections. Yet there was Mr Haqqani at his most articulate, lauding the farcical exercise as if it was the best thing that had happened to the country since its birth.
Indeed, his laudatory commentary on the 1985 elections won him a front seat in the club of those who make a career out of legitimizing dictatorships. Having become General Ziaul Haq’s “favourite soldier of Islam”, he next spearheaded the ugliest election campaign in the country’s history.
In 1988 as a paid advisor to Nawaz Sharif, he was the architect of the nasty smear campaign against Benazir Bhutto – which ranged from branding her as a ‘risk to Pakistan’s national security’ to air-dropping leaflets showing mostly fabricated photographs of Benazir Bhutto relaxing by a poolside in a revealing swimming costume. He also distributed similar forged pictures and other literature against Nusrat Bhutto (dancing with President Nixon) and other members of the Bhutto family.
Mr Haqqani was instrumental in bringing down an elected government – through the good offices of the Pakistani Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) – by turning the Punjab against the Centre. By doing so, he helped lend further legitimacy to the 8th Amendment which in time proved to be the death blow for democracy in Pakistan.
It is a known fact that for the first two years of General Musharraf’s dictatorship, Mr Haqqani was happily running a lucrative consultancy with major government departments as his clients. Anyone who knows Pakistan knows that such contracts are only obtained through political connections which Mr Haqqani obviously had.
Haqqani was accused by Musharraf of blackmailing the government, to become a Minister for Information. When refused he turned his pen against them.
And when he was sent to jail, it was over some fall out with his business associates who clearly had better connections than him. As far as going to jail for political convictions is concerned, we all know where Mr Haqqqani stands. Bhutto’s attempts at releasing political prisoners – some of them having served 10 years under Zia for committing absolutely no crime – were fiercely resisted by Mr Haqqani. Everyone in Lahore knows the lengths to which he went in branding those political prisoners “criminals” and attributing the deteriorating law and order situation in the Punjab (under Mr Haqqani’s employer Mian Nawaz Sharif) to their release. That is how much he cares for political convictions.
In the words of veteran journalist Cowasjee, Haqqani is a ‘weaver of lies, the most prominent weaver and damage-doer in Pakistan’s history‘. Cowasjee further writes:
“After Zia’s heavenly flight, democracy was reborn in Pakistan and we had Tweedledum and Tweedledee, Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif alternating at the top, both adding to our woes. During Nawaz I and Benazir II the most prominent weaver and damage-doer was Husain Haqqani. From 1988 to 1990, Husain was Punjab Chief Minister Nawaz Sharif’s special assistant, becoming his press assistant when Nawaz became prime minister in 1990, until in 1992 he was sent off to Sri Lanka as high commissioner. As soon as Nawaz was forced to step down, Husain joined Benazir’s camp and from 1993 to 1994 was Secretary to the ministry of information and broadcasting, until Benazir also shunted him out to head the House Building Finance Corporation….Husain was born and schooled in Karachi, went to Karachi University where he was a Jamaat student leader. He then became a professional journalist and for some years was with the ‘Far Eastern Economic Review,’ both in Hong Kong and here in Pakistan, until he was picked up by Nawaz. After his experiences with both ‘leaders’ he claims he is a chastened man, who has learnt a lot and who now recognizes both as being marginally as bad as each other. He writes columns for various newspapers, both in English and in Urdu and all largely critical of this government. He has formed his own political party, the Urban Democratic Front. He considers himself capable, with the necessary help, of climbing up the greasy pole and leading the 140 millions to glory.”
According to Boston Globe (cited by Anjum Niaz in 2009): “Haqqani hasn’t returned to Islamabad for eight months.” One “friend” describes Haqqani-bashing as “brutal.” Michael Krepon of the Henry L Stimson Center, who has penned many Pakistan-centric articles lambasting our security agencies, has known Haqqani for long…The ambassador has already received a “welcome back” message from Boston University’s spokesman Colin Riley. Haqqani currently wears two hats: Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington and Boston University’s professor. According to the Globe, he has “maintained ties with BU” and “continues to advise a student pursuing a doctorate who is defending her dissertation this month.” Can an envoy of a country serve two masters? Well, Haqqani is blatantly doing it, and also drawing two salaries?

Benazir Bhutto’s letter to Peter Galbraith
(A forgery by Hussain Haqqani)
For the last two decades, the following letter from Benazir to Peter Galbraith (former US ambassador with posts in the UN and first Bush administration) has been circulating in the Pakistani media. The intention is obviously to smear Benazir’s name, but the content of the letter is especially meaningful – among other things she asks Galbraith to persuade the Indian Prime Minister at the time, V.P. Singh to engage with the Pakistani army on the border so that they ‘do not impede my way’. Of course, if would not be possible to smear Benazir’s good name if she did not make it so very easy. The letter, which is copied below is dated 24-09-1990 one month after Benazir’s first government was thrown out of office.
Mrs. Benazir Bhutto
Bilawal House
Karachi
Dear Peter Galbraith,
I don’t know how to thank you for yoru so many favours to me and my
family. As you know that the orders of my dismissal were drafted in
the JAG Branch of the GHQ, and it was not possible for me to pull
along with the army and they subverted my government.
I have already communicated to Various friends in the congress and
especially Stephen Solarzn: to use their good office with President
Bush, so as to put maximum pressure on President Ishaq, and the army
in Pakistan, that they do not disqualify me from the elections as it
will be unjust and negation of all democratic principles for which we
have struggled.
It would be most appropriate if military as well as economic
Assistance to Pakistan is Stopped and all the International agencies
like the world Bank, IMF are told to Squeeze the Government of
Pakistan, and if possible all supply to Pakistan should be disrupted
so that normal life in Pakistan comes to stand still
As long as I was the Prime Minister, I kept a check on the Nuclear
device, but now I do not know what are the plans of the Government.
The suspension of F-16 and its spares will bring the army to its sensens (sic).
Dear Peter, Please use your influence on V.P Singh the Indian Prime
Minister, to engage the Pakistan army on the borders, so that they do
not impede my way.
I wish Rajiv Gandhi had been the Prime Minister of India, things would
have been easier.
Thank you and with warm regards,
Sincerely yours,
Benazir Bhutto

Comment:
The letter above is a classic case of Haqqani style forgery as has been recently revealed by an old colleague of Haqqani (Sheikh Rasheed Ahmad). Here is an article in the New York Times from 1990 that discusses this.
“But the frenzied efforts to portray Ms. Bhutto as a tool of the Americans are beginning to backfire. This week, an adviser to Nawaz Sharif, president of the Islamaic Democratic Alliance and the leading candidate for Prime Minister if Ms. Bhutto’s party is defeated, circulated a letter purporting to be written by Ms. Bhutto to Peter Galbraith. Mr. Galbraith, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff, is a friend of Ms. Bhutto’s from college days at Harvard.
The letter, however, is so patently a forgery that it has made the Islamic Democratic Alliance look foolish.
Apart from the inexplicably formal salutation, ”Dear Peter Galbraith,” the letter misspells as Solarzs the name of Representative Stephen J. Solarz, the chairman of the House subcommittee on Asian affairs, It asks Mr. Galbraith to ”please use your influence on V. P. Singh the Indian Prime Minister, to engage the Pakistan Army on the borders, so that they do not impede my way.” ”

Video: Husain Haqqani, in service of ISI-sponsored IJI led by Nawaz Sharif (a friend of Osama bin Laden):
“By and large there are two things, there is a common vision of Pakistan being basically a conservative Muslim state and the difference is essentially on its details, but the basic principle which is acknowledged is that it is will not be a secular state, it has to be an Islamic state. Most of the components of the IJI are parties or individuals who suffered during PPP era at the hand of party policies and its rather high-handed approach to politics”.

Very poor post. Very disappointing. This entire post is only a smear campaign with no actual evidence. Where is the evidence that the forged letter was made by Haqqani? Where is the evidence that he serves two masters? When I Google search his name I get results that say he is fighting the discriminatory airport screenings and trying to increase trade agreements with Pakistan. That makes him a turncoat? Your evidence is to quote an article by Anjum Niaz who is the same right-wing person that called New York Times newspaper “Jew York Times”? http://www.anjumniaz.com/Fracas_on_Fifth_Avenue.php Isn’t that just the sort of thing that Islamofascist IJT likes to say? And still you quote her article? You have a double standard here! And as for his involvement with IJT, this is old news that nobody cares about. Are we supposed to condemn Haqqani for being part of a group of mindless goons when he was in school? Did you make no mistakes when you were still in school? Will you be judged by those mistakes for the rest of your life? You are talking about things that happened over 20 years ago when he was a youth. This is not even relevant today. Why don’t you talk about what he has done for PPP over the past 10, 15 years? Why do you talk about 20 years ago and not this year? Not the recent times?but No, instead you say that he introduced “Klashankov culture” but again you have no evidence. Next time maybe you should actually read Nadeem Paracha and not just steal his words so obviously. What is the evidence that Haqqani was responsible for IJT violence? Because he was in IJT when there was violence? So if I am in Karachi and there is some violence, did I make that violence? Also, is this post written by the same Aamir Mughal who was an Intelligence Officer with DIB? Who is your master? Who has paid for this article?
This article is below the dignity of a blog that claims to support the principles and values of PPP. A person does not have to support or even like Husain Haqqani, but you should at least have the dignity to write an honest article and not the smear campaign that you have posted. I expect better from LUBP. This conspiracy garbage and smear campaigning belongs on PakAlertPress, not here. Shame.
Dear Mr Imran,
Part of this post is mailed/posted by me and I have provided the References [see the bibliography] – By the way you are contradicting your own principle by saying that “author is Aamir Mughal” an Ex IB Official” if Haqqani can become a Peepla after thoroughly serving JI-General Zia?? Then I why cannot I express my opinion? At least I have the courage to introduce myself instead of hiding behind an anonymous ID like you have above. My part of that post is as under and I stand by my opinion through References. Being an EX-IB employee is not a Federal Offence and you can visit my blog to read my even more harsh posts on Bhutto, Mawdudi, Aal-e-Saud and Khomeini as well.

Personal feud between Hussain Haqqani and Shaheen Sehbai has been turned into a National Issue! A Blast from the Past on Shaheen Sehbai and Hussain Haqqani
The present mess in the media is created by Shaheen Sehbai, Dr Shahid Masood, Kamran Khan and Ansar Abbasi about Kerry Lugar Bill.
About Shaheen Sehbai [he is angry because he demanded the Diplomatic Position and was refused]. He is filing reprts after reports against Hussain Haqqani in The News International whereas the same Hussain Haqqani [Pakistan’s Ambassador in USA] and Wajid Shamsul Hassan [Pakistan High Commission in UK] and many others used to be the regular contributor for his Internet Magazine South Asia Tribune [based in USA], Mr Sehbai often activate deactivate his deceptive internet magazine as per his interests. Read Hussain Haqqani in SATRIBUNE.
Hussain Haqqani [Pakistan Ambassador to the United States/Earlier he was a Militant of Islami Jamiat Talaba [Mawdudi’s Jamat-e-Islami’s Student Wing]
As per the news of The News International dated [December 17, 2007] Nahid Khan, the political secretary to Benazir Bhutto, has withdrawn her nomination papers in protest over the awarding of a PPP ticket to Farahnaz Ispahani. According to party sources, Nahid Khan was not happy with the award of the party ticket to Farahnaz Ispahani, the wife of Hussain Haqqani, and has informed Benazir Bhutto about withdrawing her nomination papers saying she cannot sit in the National Assembly with Ms Ispahani. Prior to marrying Farahnaz Ispahani, Hussain Haqqani was married to Naheed Khan’s sister. That could be the reason why Ms Khan did not want to sit with Ms Ispahani in the National Assembly. [1]
Let’s have quick look of Mr Hussain Haqqani’s [Nowadays an American Scholar who lecture on Democracy] dirty and filthy past while he was part and parcel of Army-Jamat-e-Islami Axis which is riddled witch scandals and corruption. A detailed CV of Husaain Haqqani is at the end to corroborate the comment.

In Punjab University, particularly, many professors were forced to resign, others were sacked.
The situation was no different in the Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad, which had in the 70s attracted many brilliant Pakistanis who were teaching abroad. As the harassment became unbearable, most of these professors went back. To what extent fundamentalists blocked scientific knowledge can be assessed by one incident at the Karachi University, where a zoology lecturer was stopped from teaching Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. Similar incidents occurred frequently in the philosophy and the economics department. The situation has worsened wit the passage of time. During that period, a policy of appeasement towards the IJT made matter worse. For the past one month I have been getting regular e-mails from Pak Blogging, which nearly always have an entry from LUBP. I normally skip LUBP, presuming its offerings to be PPP propaganda. However, this piece about Haqqani caught my attention and I had to read it.
I have to say I didn’t expect this kind of article from PPP adherents. Thank you. I am reminded of my own post in my blog last November about Haqqani, which your readers might want to read – the link is:
http://sakibahmad.blogspot.com/2009/11/pakistanis-with-dual-nationalities.html
Aamir Mughal Sahib, if your master is really Allah Mian then can we look forward to reading equally critical articles on PPP luminaries such as Rehman Malik, Babar Awan, etc.?
Dear Mr Shakib,
Off course My Master is Allah [but I don’t make Advertisement of my Faith nor does I wear my Faith on my sleeve and by the way “Islam Ko Randi Ki Tarah Nachana Yeh Aaj Kal Kay Riyakar Muslamano Mein Faishon Ban Gaya Hai]. My belief is between me and Allah.
What do you mean by “equally writing critical article of Rehman, and Babar”??? I don’t write until and unless I have something solid, writing table stories like Mr. Ansar Abbasi based on prejudice and partiality is not the critique rather a bad name to critique.
Dear Mr. Mughal, How am I hiding behind anonymous ID? I included my email here withe my comment at imranmalik1982@hotmail.com
Also, I would like to see your proof of Mr. Haqqani “currently the Ambassador of Pakistan to the USA with a USA passport in his pocket.” I think it is against the law for the Ambassador to have a foreign passport so this is a very serious charge.
Where did I say that Hussain has Foreign Passport???
Dear Mr. Mughal, the second paragraph of the article says, “Let’s have a quick look at Mr Haqqani’s [currently the Ambassador of Pakistan to the USA with a USA passport in his pocket]…” Does this not say that he has a USA passport? If this is true it is a serious charge. If it is not true I think it should be removed from the article.
Thanks for your comments, Aamir Mughal Sahib. I hope you are not implying that Zardari, Malik, Babar Awan, etc. are innocent. Please read my comments on the separate post “There are too many governments in Pakistan” by Naseer Ahmed. You will then know what I mean by “equally critical articles on PPP luminaries”.
Such exposure by sincere Pakistanis is something the country needs desperately. We need to clear out the rotten eggs from all national institutions of Pakistan – yes, the PPP should be a national institution, not a personal possession of the Bhutto-Zardari family. The kind of treatment meted out to a party faithful for speaking out against Babar Awan’s alleged corruption (see the post “A shameful decision”) is a clear indicator that you need to extend your investigations to other powerful personalities in your party. Do you have what it takes Aamir Mughal Sahib?
Dear Mr Imran,
Produce the same quote” [currently the Ambassador of Pakistan to the USA with a USA passport in his pocket]…” in my original article, and I would request from Abdul/Moderators to clarify/separate what I have written originally and what is added into it after that.
Dear Mr Shakib,
Yes, Zardari, Baber Awan and Rehman Malik are innocent until proven guilty in the Court of Law through proper Trial not a Media Trial and Witch Hunting like Senator Saifur Rehman and General Mjad did. I know what I have and don’t have to prove anything to anyone.
Best Regards
@Sakib Ahmad
Sir,
You are demanding a “Classic Greek Democratic State in a country where most [all of the time] Army and ICS/CSP Bureaucrats have ruled and that too you are demanding the same within 2 years. It is a continuing process and will take some time to develop into a Properly Working Democracy with Good Governance.
Imran / Aamir
You are right. I could not find any evidence for the claim that Mr Haqqani is a US passport holder. I have accordingly modified the post. Thanks for correcting me.
On a related note, it is a known fact that Mr Haqqani worked as a paid advisor for IJI, the same IJI which was provided millions of rupees by the ISI to defame and defeat Benazir Bhutto and PPP. Much of that illegal money was provided in order to manage the media campaign (read smear campaign) against BB. Link it with Sheikh Rashid Ahmed’s recent revelation about Mr Haqqani’s role in the BB’s letter forgery, and that will give us the whole picture.
Will the blind disciples of Mr Haqqani care to read, and reflect?

@Sarah Khan
Dear Ms. Sarah,
Thanks for the clarification.
Several friends have complained through email / facebook comments etc that by writing against Ambassador Haqqani, the LUBP has taken a wrong direction.
A few points to note:
1. We claim to be ‘critical’ supporters of PPP, not blind supporters. Those who are not happy with the critical nature of this blog will face persistent disappointment here.
2. To put things in perspective, here is a a list of articles published on Hussain Haqqani so far:
http://criticalppp.com/archives/tag/hussain-haqqani
What does this list tell? Are we biased?
3. We are not an official organ of the party, nor we have made any such claim in the past.
4. Those friends who have requested us to delete this post MUST note that we believe in freedom of speech within reasonable limits. Censorship is a characteristic of the Zia-ist mindset; we don’t believe in that.
Thus consistent with what our co-editor Omar Khattab wrote above, I support Aamir Mughal and Sarah Khan’s right to write a well researched and well argued article such as this one. Well done, Aamir and Sarah.
What a Tragedy! GEO TV, Hamid Mir and Ansar Abbasi while bullying LUBP in Capital Talk had falsely alleged that this blog is being run from President House and looked after [read Moderated] by Hussain Haqqani. Ansar and Hamid should have been shown the mirror.
@All above : As being a co-editor of LUBP i know some facts which my leader had written in her last book “RECONCILLIATION ”
Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s final book ‘Reconciliation’ says in its acknowldgements section:
Acknowledgments from ‘Reconciliation’ by Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto :
“To Husain Haqqani, who played a vital role in providing guidance and criticism, especially invaluable on the theocratic foundations of Islam and the history of Pakistan – a loyal friend whose counsel to both the author and the collaborator will always be cherished.”
Sorry to say that this article is not with original analysis .. It is sad that many of the points in this post are the same as in an attack on Ambassador Haqqani on the blog of Imran Khan supporter TeethMaestro … The first correction in this article was US Passport drama and now i had pasted the words of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto which shows that Ambassador Husain was close and loyal to BB Shaheed .. As being a party loyal and jiyala i think this post is nasty and a trash stuff .. Reconcilliation was published far later then IJI scene , BB Shaheed had forgiven Haqqani in her lyf and she used ” LOYAL FRIEND ” for Ambassador so who are we to write these type of articles .. I support PPP and my Leadership and i knw that Asif Sahab had alot of trust on Ambassador Haqqani ..
It is sad that Shaheed Mohtarma had such a high opinion and some people want to run Ambassador down for no reason except allegations relating to events thirty years ago, as a student….Also, in the only case against Haqqani , He is listed as a co-accused with Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and these people accuse him of something no one has accused him before –of being imprisoned only because of some business deal.
That’s all from my side .. Jeay Bhuttoism !!
Best Wishes !!
@ Farhad
BB was a very generous and kind hearted lady. There is no argument about that. Her comments about Mr Haqqani represent the same kindness which was a part and parcel of BB’s character.
Farhad, why don’t you try to refute allegations in this post one by one in a logical manner. For example, I was very happy to remove the sentence about Ambassador Haqqani’s USA passport once I realized that there was no evidence to support that charge.
However do you suggest that Mr Haqqani did not have any role in BB’s defamation, or that he never approached Musharraf to become a minister in his cabinet, or that he was never paid money from the ISI’s illegal payments to IJI, or that he was a naive young student during all those years?
Why don’t you accept the fact that Mr Haqqani is a man of dubious credentials; commitment and loyalty seem to be lacking in his character. In the words of Ardershir Cowasjee, Mr Haqqani is a ‘weaver of lies, the most prominent weaver and damage-doer in Pakistan’s history‘.
http://www.dawn.com/weekly/cowas/990629.htm
Instead of ad hominem against Anjum Niaz, Cowasjee or anyone else, I think we should accept to have differences of opinion within the party, instead of trying to suppress voices of difference and diversity.
I know as a co-editor of LUBP, you have the authority to write and post articles as you wish. Please feel free to use that right to write an article in Ambassador Haqqni’s defence. While some of us (including Dr Israr Shah) do not enjoy freedom of speech in the party’s CEC, LUBP does believe in freedom of speech.
Bol k lab azad hain tere
@sarah
you are right in suggesting freedom of diffrence of opinion within our own party , there is no point cheerleading our party . i totaly stand by Dr Israr Shah . there is no question about BB’s generous nature . BB had decided to reconcile with all the political forces ,then why only point toward Haqqani alone. if BB was ready to reconcile with his fathers murders then we should also look into affairs in broader national interest.
but suggesting Haqqani is an Jewish agent, and skillfully added some clauses in KL-Bill to gain some vested interest is wrong.
questioning an individual’s loyalty towards his own country is very dangerous and tasteless.
Mr Haider is correct regarding Haqqani being a “Jewish Agent” and Kerry Lugar Bill. Complete background of this as under:

Army was on board on Kerry Lugar Bill:)
Berman says he consulted Pak military on aid bill Saturday, October 10, 2009
http://www.thenews.com.pk/top_story_detail.asp?Id=24938
WASHINGTON: Pakistani critics are manufacturing a crisis over $7.5 billion in US aid for political reasons, one of the US authors of the assistance plan said on Thursday. The US Congress last week approved the plan authorizing a tripling of developmental aid over five years. But fierce controversy in Pakistan about conditions in the bill could make it harder for US lawmakers to appropriate the money going forward, a necessary step before the aid goes to Islamabad. “This is a created crisis, by people who either haven’t read the bill or don’t want to describe it accurately, and whose goal is either to destabilize the (Pakistani) government, or challenge some of the Pakistani military’s priorities,” Democratic Representative Howard Berman, chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Reuters.
Berman is the House sponsor of the legislation that was drafted with Senate sponsors Democrat John Kerry and Republican Richard Lugar. It has no strings attached on development aid, but stipulates conditions for security aid, saying Pakistan must show commitment on fighting terrorism and dismantling nuclear networks. It also says the security forces of Pakistan should not subvert the political system. Pakistan’s powerful military, which has ruled the country for more than half its 62-year history, has voiced serious concern about the legislation, and opposition politicians said it undermined national sovereignty.
But Berman said that on security matters the bill outlined a joint strategy with Pakistan. He said members of Pakistan’s military had been familiar with provisions of the measure as it worked its way through the US House and Senate. “I’ve been in touch with them (the military) through this whole process,” Berman told Reuters. “I’ve spoken with (Pakistani army chief) General (Ashfaq) Kayani, other people. It’s a common strategy,” he said.
This joint strategy is “that we want to assist their efforts to take on the counterinsurgency, to disband terrorist groups within Pakistan, to protect their nuclear facilities from proliferation,” Berman said. The controversy comes as the United States is pressing Pakistan’s army to expand its operations against Pakistani Taliban fighters to include Afghan Taliban and al-Qaeda militants in lawless border enclaves. Berman said that since April, both the government of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and the military “have shown a strong willingness to take on at least key elements of the insurgency, and with some success.”
Kerry’s office issued a statement debunking what he said were “myths” circulating about the bill, denying for example that it had any language about unmanned drone aircraft Washington has used to attack militant targets in Pakistan. Kerry is travelling to the region next week, an aide said. US President Barack Obama had urged passage of the aid measure to promote stability in a nuclear-armed country that is key to the US war in Afghanistan. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said on Thursday that the president intended to sign it into law, because it was “important assistance for Pakistan.”
State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said assistance bills for some other countries, like Egypt and Colombia, had similar kinds of conditions. “We’re not holding Pakistan up to any kind of different standard than we would any other country where the US taxpayer is making an investment,” Kelly said. But the storm of protest in Pakistan has raised some hackles in the US Congress, with House Republican Leader John Boehner asking whether the administration had done its homework before promoting the bill. Democratic Representative Gary Ackerman said he had no interest in a partnership characterized by “suspicion, resentment and political manipulation.”

“QUOTE”
Where has US aid to Pakistan gone? Mariana Baabar [STORY APPEARED IN 2007]
ISLAMABAD : The billions of dollars in US military aid to Pakistan since September 11, 2001, without any accountability, has now been billed as a “tsunami of new funding”.
Washington’s Centre for Public Integrity, in its report, says that today human rights activists, critics of the Pakistani government and members of Congress want to know, where most of the money — totalling in the billions — coming through a Defence Department programme, subject to virtually no Congressional oversight, has disappeared to. The Centre says that this is a major finding of more than a year of investigation by the Centre for Public Integrity’s International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ). US military aid to Pakistan since September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks includes almost $5 billion in coalition support funds, a programme controlled by the Defence Department to reimburse key allies in the global war on terror. Pentagon reports that the ICIJ obtained through the Freedom of Information Act requests show that Pakistan is the No 1 recipient of these funds — receiving more than 10 times the amount that went to the No 2 recipient, Poland — and that there is scant documentation of how the money was used. Pakistan also benefited from other funding mechanisms set up in the aftermath of the 2001 attacks. In three years after the attacks, Pakistan was the third-largest recipient of the Pentagon’s new regional defence counter terrorism fellowship programme, designed to train foreign forces in counter terrorism techniques. More than $23 million was earmarked for Pakistan in fiscal 2006 for “improving counter terrorism strike capabilities” under another new Pentagon programme referred to colloquially as Section 1206 training, which allows the Pentagon to use a portion of its annual funding from Congress to train and equip foreign militaries. Pakistan finished first in the race for this new Pentagon-controlled training.
The US State Department rates Pakistan’s human rights record as poor and reports a long litany of abuses. That nourishes critics’ claims that the US largesse has been put to abusive purposes, including to buy weapons that have been turned against Pakistani civilians and to offer bounties on suspects the US is seeking. According to Senator Sana Baloch, an opposition lawmaker who fled the country out of safety concerns, the US has several military bases inside Pakistan, including some in the senator’s home province of Balochistan. “Most of the US bases are based in Balochistan,” Baloch told ICIJ in an interview. “One or two of them are in Kharan, my own home district. The US is using the bases in this area for the war on terror. We are very supportive of the US in this role.”
The majority of the new US funding to Pakistan has come in the form of billions of dollars of coalition support funds (CSF), a post-9/11 funding mechanism created to reimburse key countries for expenses incurred in supporting American counter terrorism operations. According to K Alan Kronstadt, an expert on South Asia at the Congressional research service, by August 2006, CSF accounted for roughly $4.75 billion of the military aid Pakistan received from the US since the terrorist attacks. Pentagon documents obtained by ICIJ say the money that went to Pakistan was largely for “military operations on the Afghanistan border.”
Coalition support funds are considered a reimbursement by some and a blank check by others. Craig Cohen, the co-author of a recent Centre for Strategic and International Study on US aid to Pakistan, asked rhetorically whether CSF money is “intended to yield some sort of specific action on the part of the government,” adding, “If so, there’s clearly no oversight.”
Olga Oliker, an expert on US defence policy and co-author of a recent RAND think tank report on the human rights performance of internal security forces in South Asia, said she’s concerned that US-made weapons that go to Pakistani security forces and US training that the forces receive are being used against civilian populations. “In implementing assistance,” she told ICIJ, “the US has paid relatively little attention to human rights abuses and oversight. People weren’t paying attention.” The new Democratic-controlled Congress has taken a greater interest in CSF payments to Pakistan. Under the previous GOP majority, there was virtually no oversight of CSF payments to any country. In January 2007, the House of Representatives acted to impose conditions on military aid to Pakistan by adopting the Implementing the 9/11 Commission Recommendations Act of 2007. Section 1442 of the bill relates to Pakistan. It identifies areas of concern for US policy, including the need for Pakistan to curb the proliferation of nuclear technology, to address the presence of the Taliban and other extremist forces and to secure its borders to prevent movement of terrorists. The bill would impose limits on foreign assistance to Pakistan, declaring that the US assistance may not be approved until “the president determines and certifies to the appropriate Congressional committees that the government of Pakistan is making all possible efforts to prevent the Taliban from operating in areas under its sovereign control. “In addition, Pakistan would be required to demonstrate that it is making significant steps toward free and fair parliamentary elections in 2007.” The bill also requires that the president submit a report describing the long-term strategy of US engagement with Pakistan.
“The American-supplied military arsenal has been used against Baloch nationalists,” Senator Baloch told ICIJ. He said he and others have gone to the State Department, “and the State Department says [the US has] given military hardware with no conditions.” A former US official, previously based in Pakistan, acknowledged to the ICIJ that in Balochistan “the [Pakistani] army stepped in with a pretty heavy hand last year.”

I have little time to read a hateful article written by the Hizb-ut-Tahrir / Jamaat-e-Islami mafia and their affiliates. In some ways, they are not much different from the Haqqani brigade. Both are historically rooted in the Maududian thought, and are fascist in nature.
In his capacity as the co-chairman of PPP, President Asif Zardari is our best defence against ‘the establishment’. Anyone trying to malign Zardari or democracy, at this juncture in history, is either a Ziaist by heart or a Ziaist by actions.
PML ad campaign against Benazir backfires
Thursday, November 15, 2007
By Muhammad Ahmad Noorani
ISLAMABAD: A letter forged by an over-smart opposition leader against Benazir Bhutto 18 years ago, came back to haunt him on Wednesday when the ruling PML used it in an ad campaign against the PPP but in vain.
A PPP spokesperson said Benazir Bhutto and the PPP would take firm legal action against the advertisement. The letter, said to have been written by PPP leader Benazir Bhutto to her friend Peter Galbraith in late 1990, was then circulated by the Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) to defame Benazir Bhutto before the 1990 elections. The letter was forged by then opposition activist Naveed Malik, who now is an opposition leader.
The letter was used on Wednesday by the Pakistan Muslim League (Q) in huge half-page ads in different newspapers. A senior marketing expert said at least Rs 5 million was spent on the ad.
The letter was first released by Naveed Malik, political adviser to the then Punjab chief minister, with the aim to demoralize PPP voters in the 1990 elections. The PPP lost by a big margin but later the polls were declared as massively rigged.
On Wednesday, Malik admitted that the letter had then been forged by the IJI but tried to wriggle out of the blame. He said as the advisor to the chief minister, he was misguided by certain elements working on a mission to damage Benazir’s image and to help the IJI.
Naveed said in a letter e-mailed to The News that he was suspicious about the integrity of the letter at the time of releasing it to the media. “Later, while investigating the facts, I came to know that there were certain elements working on a project to defame Benazir in the public.”
He said that this letter was in the custody of Ghulam Haider Wyne, the then PML provincial chief, in the office record of the PML Lahore, which is now under the control of Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervez Elahi.
Munawar Anjum, a spokesman of Benazir Bhutto, told The News that Benazir never used letterheads titled “Mrs Benazir Bhutto” as stated on the said letter. He said that the name of Mr Peter Galbraith was deliberately misspelled as Gailbraith in the letter to evade legal action in case Mr Galbraith legally challenged it.
Galbraith was also the senior advisor to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in 1979-1993 and not in the NDI as stated in the forged letter, Munawar further revealed. Munawar also disclosed a very interesting point that the said forged letter was full of grotesque grammatical mistakes, which could not be committed by PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto, a former student of Oxford. Munawar told The News that the PPP will take strict legal action against the defamation campaign against Benazir by the PML.

I have no major issues with personal clouts and tribal loyalties as long as such clouts and loyalties are used for collective, not personal, benefit. However, questions arise when people with shady past and dubious present seek to maintain and activate a media tribe to promote their personal interests while ignoring or even suppressing issues of more urgent and collective importance.
Take, for example, the case of Pakistan’s ambassador to the USA, Mr. Husain Haqqani, who has a dedicated lobby of paid propagandists, fake liberal opportunists (some of whom are clearly pro-military establishment) and ambitious flatterers who hang around him and his wife Mrs. Farahnaz Ispahani on Twitter and also in Islamabad or Washington D.C., not missing out a single opportunity to promote the duo, eulogizing their imaginary services to Pakistan or Pakistan Peoples Pary. President Zardari is abused (e.g., by Ejaz Haider and Tammy Haq), Benazir Bhutto is cursed (e.g. Murtaza Razvi’s article on Nusrat Bhutto’s death), PPP is blamed (e.g. blaming the victim mafia’s columns on Taseer’s murder), who cares? as long as the Namoos (honour) of Haqqani is carefully guarded. Apparently Haqqani has misappropriated the PPP’s intellectual capital and naive followers to develop and promote his personal career and guard his personal honour.
While Ambassador Hussain Haqqani has played an important role in serving the PPP’s interests in Washington, D.C., the due credit for his performance goes to President Asif Zardari who is the main mind behind political manoeuvring and policy making in the last four years. While Mr. Haqqani is an able executioner, as he was in his capacity as an assistant to Ghulam Ishaq Khan, Nawaz Sharif and previous masters, the key role of President Zaradri is being diluted and completely put aside by the Haqqani Network.
This fact, however, is lost on the Namoos-e-Haqqni Network (NHN) on Twitter and elsewhere. For them, and also for our esteemed Ambassador, it is sufficient if his own Namoos (honour) is carefully guarded by the likes of Ejaz Haider, Ayesha Tammy Haq and others, some of whom are known for their deep hatred of the very leader (President Zardari) and the party (PPP) he is duty-bond to serve. For Haqqani, his own Namoos is the first and last priority, the rest may go to wherever!
Such network has been able to thrive because of a naive decision by the PPP leadership to accommodate the Ambassador’s wife in the President’s media team.
It is, therefore, no wonder that most (if not all) of the Namoos-e-Haqqani Network loyalists, columnists, bloggers and Tweeps show little to no interest in highlighting the Pakistani State’s atrocities against the Baloch, Pashtuns, Shia Muslims, Ahmadiyya Muslims and others, which have gained further momentum since the PPP came to power in early 2008.
The NHN has taken little to no position on the fact that more than any one else, it is PPP’s own ministers e.g. Rehman Malik, CM Raisani, Babar Awan, Sharmila Farooqi etc, who have shamelessly served as convenient mouthpieces of Pakistan army and the ISI, frequently praising ISI and army’s services to the nation while completely disregarding the thousands of the Balochs, Pashtuns and Shia Muslims who have been mercilessly butchered by Pakistan army and its proxy organizations (TTP-SSP-LeJ etc).
Barring a token statement or two, the Namoos-e-Haqqani Network has done nothing to highlight the ongoing persecution and murder of Toori Pashtuns (Shia Muslims) of Parachinar who remain besieged by the ISI-Haqqani Taliban for the last four years. In fact one of their paid operatives (ironically a Toori Shia) is seen actively promoting and defending the honour of ISI. Similarly, the NHN has kept tight-lipped on the ongoing massacres of thousands of Baloch nationalists who are fighting for their basic human rights.
As an example of how the NHN operates in Pakistan’s mainstream media and also on Twitter, consider the case of how NHN members have been activated to defend the honour of Husain Haqqani in response to the Mansoor Ijaz saga and Imran Khan’s speech. Read again, the emphasis is not on defending the honour of Pakistan, or that of President Zardari, the emphasis is clearly on defending the honour (Namoos) of Husain Haqqani.
While there are many examples on Twitter, let me cite only a few tweets. Note how one flatterer bestows Hussain Haqqani and his wife with the title of Mr. Pakistan and Mrs. Pakistan, a proposal which is hurriedly endorsed by the ‘Mrs. Pakistan’.

The following names have been identified as key affiliates of Haqqani on Twitter: Raza Rumi, Marvi Sirmed, Dr. Mohammad Taqi, Ejaz Haider, Beena Sarwar etc, and some mini-affiliates: Riaz Toori, Shahid Saeed, Malik Siraj Akbar etc. While I personally respect the writings of Raza, Marvi and Taqi, I think they are sacrificing their own Namoos for the sake of Haqqani’s Namoos which is not a great bargain.
With reference to NHN activities in response to Imran Khan’s speech, here are four snapshots, two are newspaper items and two are blog posts:
Mehmal Sarfraz writes in Daily Times (Editorial, 1 Nov 2011):
Mr Khan’s speech started with attacks against President Zardari and the Sharif brothers. His repetition of the false story pertaining to Ambassador Husain Haqqani about a nonexistent letter was uncalled for. Mr Khan should not bend facts to suit his case.
http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2011\111\story_1-11-2011_pg3_1
Dr Mohammad Taqi writes in Daily Times (No he Khan’t, 3 Nov 2011):
The PTI leader has been hanging out with Sheikh Rashid of Rawalpindi and early in his speech hit a low that even the foul-mouthed Rashid might envy. Imran Khan’s accusation against Ambassador Husain Haqqani, making wild allegations and that too based on a story by Mansoor Ijaz — a discredited ‘mediator’, neo-con sympathiser and proponent of Bush’s Iraq war — was simply pathetic. One wonders about his motive to quote a person who boasts of ties to both India and global jihadists. While a separate column is needed to address this issue, it just goes to show the shallowness of the PTI leader and that in his desperation for power he can stoop to any level.
http://www.dailytimes.com.pk/default.asp?page=2011\113\story_3-11-2011_pg3_2
Sabahat Zakariya writes in Express Tribune – Blog (1 Nov 2011):
The speech was full of feel-good optimism as was expected and required. Talk of corruption, delivering rights to the poorest in the society and anti-Zardari sentiment elicited the most visible roars of approval. Personally speaking, I was disappointed at his resorting to lies about Hussain Haqqani’s nationality but heartened by his passing mention of minority and women’s rights. http://blogs.tribune.com.pk/story/8695/how-imran-khan-won-me-over/
Pakistan Media Watch – Blog writes in “Media Conspiracies and Imran Khan” (31 October 2011)
In an otherwise straightforward speech in Lahore on Sunday, Imran Khan alluded to a conspiracy theory of Mansoor Ijaz that this blog has discredited not only once, but twice already. One can give Imran Khan the benefit of doubt, though, as there is a history of examples of journalists feeding Imran conspiracies, possibly as an attempt to curry favour with the PTI chief. As we stated before, “Whether or not you support Imran Khan, all political leaders need to be given the facts, not led by their noses on a wild goose chase”. As Imran’s political influence grows, it is important that he – and all political leaders – be able to make decisions from factual information, not conspiracies. Otherwise, the consequences can be disastrous.
http://pakistanmediawatch.com/2011/10/31/media-conspiracies-and-imran-khan/
I repeat: I have no major issues with personal clouts and tribal loyalties except when such clouts and loyalties are used for personal benefit while discarding the collective benefit.
Now let me ask: why is no such tribal support activated to mourn Ajmeer Shah? Why is such tribal loyalty absent when Ali Dayan Hasan, Mustafa Qadri etc misrepresent Shia genocide by the ISI backed TTP-SSP-LeJ as routine sectarian violence between Sunnis and Shias? Why is the NHN nowhere to be seen when dumped, deshaped dead bodies of the Baloch youths are found? Politically speaking, why does such NHN go into hiding when Mosharraf Zaidi, Ejaz Haider, Najam Sethi etc manufacture most poisonous and slanderous attacks on President Zardari? Where do they vanish when Murtaza Razvi writes a poisonous post against Benazir Bhutto on the death of her own mother, Begum Nusrat Bhutto? Is the honour of Husain Haqqani more important than the honour of Shaheed Rani?
I hope someone may help me in findings answers to the above questions.

It is a known fact that Mr Haqqani worked as a paid advisor for IJI,
the same IJI which was provided millions of rupees by the ISI to
defame and defeat Benazir Bhutto and PPP. Much of that illegal money
was provided in order to manage the media campaign (read smear
campaign) against BB. Link it with Sheikh Rashid Ahmed’s recent
revelation about Mr Haqqani’s role in the BB’s letter forgery, and
that will give us the whole picture.
Will the blind disciples of Mr Haqqani care to read, and reflect?

BB was a very generous and kind hearted lady. There is no argument
about that. Her comments about Mr Haqqani represent the same kindness
which was a part and parcel of BB’s character.
Do you suggest that Mr Haqqani did not have any role in BB’s
defamation, or that he never approached Musharraf to become a minister
in his cabinet, or that he was never paid money from the ISI’s illegal
payments to IJI, or that he was a naive young student during all those
years?
Mr Haqqani is a man of dubious credentials; commitment and loyalty
seem to be lacking in his character. In the words of Ardershir
Cowasjee, Mr Haqqani is a ‘weaver of lies, the most prominent weaver
and damage-doer in Pakistan’s history‘.

Comments on Husain Haqqani and Balochistan From an LUBP article:
Hoss says:
July 23, 2011 at 12:43 pm
First I don’t think there are liberals in Pakistan. The name mentioned
Raza Rumi, Marvi sarmad and few others are not liberal by any means.
Marvi is a PPP supporter, Raza Rumi has no clue about any thing. He is
primarily a meaty mouthy writer with half baked ideas and probably
does not even understand what liberalism is all about. Most of these
guys just follow Hussain Haqqani who is nothing more than a rank
opportunist. A recent article in a US paper, a baloch writer, exposed
Hussain Haqqani, and I agree with what he wrote about him. Will try to
post the link too. I read somewhere that most of the Pakistani
liberals are primarily left of the center in good times and right of
the center in bad times. There is no chance of true liberal emerging
from a predominantly feudal society where most of the middle class so
called liberals, profess liberalism to become acceptable to the elite.
Even the secularists from the smaller provinces are secular in
reaction to state’s commitment to religion and the use of religion to
suppress political rights of the people of the smaller provinces. They
hardly believe in human rights and are as against the women rights as
an fundamentalist rightwing can be.
We have a thoroughly confused society and there is no magic wand to
fix that. This confusion helps the establishment to manipulate
different groups for maintaining its control over the state.
With apologies to the writer, I don’t think there is even a single
soul in the Ppp that can be called liberal in any sense. Liberals
stand for change, and none in the ppp likes the change.

Kudos, Hoss Sain!
You nailed it, The article you are mentioning was by Masti Khan, I
think, who exposes HH for writing a letter to Carnegie Endowment to
stop a gathering of Baloch secularists.
Though HH has denied writing such letter but Masti Khan sticks to what
he has written.
Ayesha S wrote an obituary when democrat HH turned to a diplomat HH,
and criticised him for using his intellect and skills advocating the
military in United States.
But everything is right under the tag of “Pragmatism” and “Practicality”.
Hoss says:
July 23, 2011 at 1:59 pm
Actually Ali I had discussion with Ayesha when she was in DC on HH and
his continuously changing loyalties. I think at heart he is still a
gun touting jamaatia that he was in Karachi.
Ali Arqam says:
July 23, 2011 at 2:30 pm
Though a columnist friend commented that Ayesha S is harsh on HH, but
when I watched his recent session at Carnegie Endowment, I was shocked
after listening him repeating the same arguments in defense of
military on post Bin Laden developments, as spinned by the pro
military writer Ejaz Haider and others like him.
