Shame on extremist Barelvis
More than 500 religious scholars belonging to the Barelvi school of thought paid rich tributes to the assassin of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer on Tuesday and urged ‘Muslims across the country’ to boycott the funeral ceremony.
While the Deoband and Barelvi leaders appear to be on the same page when it comes to condemning the slain Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader for terming the blasphemy law as a black law, the Barelvi scholars, who claim to be the ‘true lovers of the Holy Prophet (pbuh)’, have taken a more hardline stance.
The largest body of the Barelvi group, the Jamaate Ahle Sunnat Pakistan (JASP), whose directions are considered binding on every other organisation that follows the same school of thought, issued a statement saying that “No Muslim should attend the funeral or even try to pray for Salmaan Taseer or even express any kind of regret or sympathy over the incident.”
The statement which has been endorsed by senior Barelvi leaders such as Professor Saeed Shah Kazmi, Allama Syed Riaz Hussain Shah, Syed Shah Turabul Haq Qadri and Hajji Mohammad Tayyab calls the assassin Mumtaz Hussain Qadri ‘Ashiqe Rasool Ghaziye Mulk (Lover of the Prophet, Commander of the Country)’.
“We pay rich tributes and salute the bravery, valour and faith of Mumtaz Qadri,” the statement said, adding that the ministers, politicians, ‘so-called’ intellectuals and anchor persons should learn lessons from the governor’s death. The scholars said that those who insult the Holy Prophet (pbuh), even if they did not intend to, were liable for death.
Hajji Mohammad Tayyab, who is also the secretary general of the Sunni Ittehad Council, told The Express Tribune that scholars had “repeatedly urged the president, prime minister and Governor Taseer himself that if their knowledge about the blasphemy law are limited, they should consult them and avoid debating over the issue as it would inflame the people and then anything could happen.”
Shah Turabul Haq Qadri’s son Siraj, also a senior member of the JASP, endorsed the statement and said it was now binding on every Muslim.
Jamiat Ulemae Pakistan (JUP) central executive committee member Maulana Shabbir went as far as saying that in his opinion Salmaan Taseer was ‘Wajubul Qatil’ (must be killed according to divine law). “He had called the divine law of God, a black law and tried to protect a condemned blasphemer,” he said.
Senior Sunni Tehrik leader Shahid Ghauri said although his party was yet to issue any formal statement about the matter, he would support the call of JASP because the people who gave the edict were his elders.
Senior Jamaate Islami leader Farid Paracha distanced his organisation from the JASP statement, but condemned the governor for calling the blasphemy law, a black law. “I believe that this call for changing the law was being done at the behest of the US and other western powers.”
Senior cleric of the Deoband school of thought and Jamia Binoria chief Mufti Naeem said he could not understand why the slain PPP leader invited trouble for himself, especially given that the blasphemy law was passed in 1985 by the parliament unanimously. “He kept on taking Aasia’s name, but I ask why didn’t he ever make a similar plea for Aafia (Siddiqui).” Naeem said although Islam says that anyone who commits blasphemy is liable to death punishment, what the killer Mumtaz Qadri did was totally wrong as he took the law into his hand.
“The blasphemy law was made exactly to prevent such incidents. Else there will be chaos in the country and everyone would kill everyone,” he said. Maulana Asad Thanvi too supported Naeem’s stance and said although what governor Taseer did was condemnable in the strongest words, he should have been tried in the courts.
Allama Abbas Kumaili of the Shia school of thought said the blasphemy law can be misused and there was no doubt about it. “But the way Salmaan Taseer took up the matter was blunt which inflamed the more emotional and ignorant people of our country.”

LAHORE: The killer of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer has revealed that some of his colleagues were also involved in the plan to assassinate the governor, a private TV channel reported on Tuesday. Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri told a joint investigation team that some of his colleagues were aware of his plan and he had asked them to arrest him alive. He told the team during investigation that he had no remorse on killing Taseer and that was why he laid down his weapon after shooting him. The channel reported that he was removed from the Punjab Police Special Branch three years ago for having extremist views. He belongs to the Barelvi sect and is the disciple of Golra Sharif. It is learnt that some former security squad officials would also be questioned. Qadri had joined the Punjab Police five years ago and was inducted into the Elite Force some time ago. After obtaining clearance from the authorities, he was put on the security squad of VVIPs and of the governor. daily times monitor/staff report (Source: Daily Times)
he Elite Force guard who gunned down Punjab Governor Salman Taseer is said to be associated with ‘Dawat-i-Islami’, a non-political and non-violent religious group with Barelvi leaning.
This was disclosed by a colleague of Mumtaz Qadri, the self confessed assassin.
Qadri, 26, son of Malik Bashir, joined Punjab police and got Elite Force training in 2006-7. He was posted to the Elite Force wing in Rawalpindi in 2008.
Qadri, who has five brothers and four sisters, got married three years ago and his first child, a son, was born four months ago.

In an interview to his daughter Shehrbano for Newsweek, Taseer said recently, “I worry about terrorism. The Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz), which is in government in the Punjab, has old linkages with and a natural affinity for extremist organizations like Sipah-e-Sahaba, Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Khatm-e-Nabuwwat, and so many others. Let’s face it: terrorists need logistical support from within—somebody funds them, somebody guides them, and somebody looks after them—and that support is coming from the Punjab.”

Most religious parties avoid outright condemnation; Sajid Mir, Piracha assail murder
KARACHI: Leading Ulema of Jamaat Ahle Sunnat Pakistan (JASP) in a joint statement have asked Muslims not to offer Namaz-e-Janaza nor try to lead funeral prayers of Governor Punjab Salman Taseer.
In a joint statement issued here they have also asked not to express regrets or sympathies over his assassination. Those issuing the statement include the JASP Central Ameer Prof Syed Mazhar Saeed Shah Kazmi, Allama Syed Riaz Hussain Shah, Shah Turab-ul-Haq Qadri, Allama Zamir Sajid, Pir Khalid Sultan, Pir Ghulam Siddiq Naqshbandi, Allama Syed Khizr Hussain Shah, Alhaj Amjad Chishti, Allama Ghulam Sarawar Hazarvi, Allama Syed Shamsuddin Bokhari, Pir Syed Ashiq Ali Shah Jilani, Mufti Muhammad Iqbal Chishti, Allama Fazal Jamil Rizvi, Agha Muhammad Ibrahim Naqshbandi Mujaddidi, Maulana Muhammad Riaz Qadri, Maulana Gulzar Naeemi, Allama Syed Ghulam Yaseen Shah, and over 500 other ulema and honorable muftis attached to the JASP.
Those favouring the person indulged in blasphemy are themselves blasphemous, they announced. Paying glowing tributes to Malik Mumtaz Hussain, and his courage, who killed Governor Salman Taseer, they said he is lover of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and is a ‘Ghazi’. Mumtaz had revived the 14-century-old tradition of Islam and put their head high in pride. It was only Prophet (PBUH) who could forgive any act of blasphemy but none other could ever do it.
They asked the rulers to save their faith by announcing that they would desist from attempting to amend the law of blasphemy. Asim Hussain adds from Lahore: Leaders of majority of religious parties desisted from expressing their views on the murder of Salman Taseer, while others gave a guarded response, saying the slain Punjab governor had been inviting such kind of reaction for quite some time.
He had continuously been violating the constitution of Pakistan by supporting an amendment to the blasphemy laws and interfering in the judicial process of the blasphemy convict Aasia Bibi, though he knew well that Muslims were very touchy on the matter, they said while talking to The News.
Some religious leaders like Jamiat Ahle Hadith President Prof Sajid Mir and Jamaat-e-Islami leader Dr Farid Piracha, however, condemned the murder saying Islam forbids people to punish even the criminals by taking the law into their hands.
Jamiat Ulema Pakistan (JUP) President Abdul Khair Mohammad Zubair said Islam strictly forbids taking the life of anyone without judicial or state order, but added that Salman Taseer had shown utter disregard for the religious sentiments of the entire nation.
The mobile phone of Sahabzada Fazal Karim, chairman Sunni Ittehad Council, remained switched off throughout Tuesday evening. A spokesman for Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Syed Munawwar Hasan said he was not feeling well and could not be available on phone. The spokesman also expressed his helplessness to obtain any formal statement on the issue saying that any statement on the matter would be issued on the next day after consultations. Other main leaders of the Sunni Ittehad Council – Haji Hanif Tayyeb, Dr Ashraf Asif Jalali, Sarwat Ijaz Qadri – were also not available.
Tahaffuz-e-Namoos-e-Risalat Mahaz (TNRM) leaders held an emergency meeting after receiving the reports of murder of Salman Taseer. The meeting, chaired by Razaul Mustafa Naqshbandi, continued for two hours. Later, in a statement the TNRM said Taseer had been violating the laws of the land by supporting a blasphemy convict, Aasia Bibi, from day one. His irresponsible acts from the high office of the Governor of Punjab were inappropriate and offending 170 million Muslims of the country.
Meanwhile, Sunni Tehrik Lahore President Mujahid Abdul Rasool said Muslims should not attend the funeral prayers of Salman Taseer since he had wilfully committed blasphemy and shown disrespect towards protecting the honour of the Holy Prophet (PBUH).

‘Killer, an extremely religious person’
Wednesday, January 05, 2011
By Mazhar Tufail
ISLAMABAD: Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, a policeman who killed Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer here on Tuesday, is extremely religious person, an investigator told The News.
“Malik Mumtaz belongs to Barelvi school of thought and is an extremely religious person,” said a senior officer of a security agency involved in investigating the killer of Taseer. “Mumtaz did not hide anything from us and started telling everything on his own during the preliminary investigation,” he said, requesting anonymity. According to the investigator, the accused said the thought of killing Taseer, for committing blasphemy of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), struck his mind only a few days ago. He said when Taseer arrived in Islamabad, he got himself posted in his security escort.
“I have been looking for an opportunity since the morning to shoot him because I did not want to allow him live anymore,” the official quoted the accused as having told the investigation team. “When I received official gun in the morning, I immediately loaded and put it on the automatic burst,” the accused said.
The investigator said the accused disclosed he has also been performing security duty with Taseer in the past, therefore, he knew that Taseer usually goes to Kohsar Market on foot after reaching home in the afternoon. Saying it was a habit of Taseer, the accused told investigators that when Taseer returned home after visiting different places, including Aiwan-e-Sadr, he went with other colleagues to a tyre shop.
“When we were returning, the governor was ready to leave the market. I considered it an opportune moment and pulled the trigger of my gun,” the investigator quoted the accused as having said. “I am completely relieved and satisfied now,” he told the investigator.

Pakistan: Punjab: Salman Taseer’s assassin linked to Islamist movements
Mumtaz Qadri affiliated with the conservative group Dawat-e-Islami. The fundamentalist leaders celebrate the killing and call for a boycott of the mourning for the death of the governor. Marches tomorrow in Karachi in favour of the blasphemy law.
Lahore – Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, the murderer of Salman Taseer – Governor of Punjab, who was killed on January 4 – belongs to the Dawat-e-Islami group, an Islamic Association of political and (officially) non-violent nature, which is based on the Barelvi conservative movement. A march organized by Islamic radicals against the “conspirators” who want to repeal the blasphemy law is planned for tomorrow in Karachi. Meanwhile, Catholic leaders in Pakistan, having decided not to attend Taseer’s funeral of to avoid further incidents, have laid flowers and prayed at the governor’s tomb. The leadership of the National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) has also called for “thorough investigations” and demanded that the guilty be “brought to justice.”
A colleague of Mumtaz Qadri (pictured) has confirmed that he belonged to the Dawat-i-Islami group, close to the Sunni Muslim movement Barelvi. Founded in 1880, it has spread throughout the Indian sub-continent and has been characterized for its promotion of Islamic tradition and the fight against any attempt to modernize doctrine. More than 500 Islamic leaders of the movement have paid tribute to the murderer and called on “Muslims all over the country” to boycott the days of mourning in memory of Salman Taseer. Tomorrow a Tahfuz Namoos-e-Rislat March will be held in Karachi, an initiative against any “conspiracy” to repeal the blasphemy law. The leaders of the Tehreek-e-Namoos Rislat have met people and personalities from all walks of life, inviting the population to join the mass march. The city has been plastered with posters and billboards, leaflets, lauding the “march of the million” to support the infamous law.
Meanwhile, the leader of the Catholic Church of Pakistan has paid tribute to the figure of Salman Taseer and his efforts against the fundamentalist current that is sweeping through Pakistan. Fr. Emmanuel Yousaf Mani, director of the National Commission for Justice and Peace (NCJP) has laid flowers at the tomb of the governor and prayed for the deceased and the family. The priest has called on ” the government to investigate and ensure that the guilty be” brought to justice. ” He also expects “a clear position” from the executive and “effective legislative initiatives” to eradicate religious extremism from Pakistani society, putting into practice “the necessary measures to stop misuse of the blasphemy law.”
In a statement Archishop Lawrence Saldanha of Lahore and chairman of the Bishops’ Conference of Pakistan, has honoured the memory of Salman Taseer. Expressing “deep regret” and “sincere condolences” for the death of the governor, the Archbishop spoke of “the admiration and respect” of the Christian community for “his courageous position in favour of Asia Bibi” and his request to “repeal the law blasphemy. ” His death, the bishop concludes, is a signal of growing religious fanaticism in Pakistan, a country that shows “zero tolerance” for the faithful of minorities or those who think differently.
