Dear Dr Safdar Abbasi,

From the very outset I as a critical supporter of the Pakistan Peoples Party acknowledge your services to the party. These services date back to at least 35 years.

Your mother, Dr. Ashraf Abbasi, holds a special place not just in the history of the PPP but also of Pakistan for being the first lady deputy speaker of the National Assembly from 1971 till 1977. This honor was repeated again in 1988 which without doubt has never been replicated by any other party in Pakistan.

Your brother, Haji Munawwar Ali Abbasi has been a committed party worker and a legislator of the party in the Sindh Assembly on more than one occasion. It is needless to say that whatever you and your family has done for the party has not only been acknowledg

ed but also duly rewarded.

A political worker’s dream is always to reach parliament and by the grace of Almighty Allah, you and your family have achieved the dreams of many a political worker.

Your spouse, Ms. Naheed Khan’s commitment to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto is unparalleled. She was not only the eyes and ears of the martyred Chairperson but also a very efficient organizer at the party level. She held positions of Political Secretary to the Chairperson and Prime Minister and was also an MNA in 2002-2007 National Assembly, which are nothing less than apt rewards.

Abraham Lincoln in his famous speech on June 16, 1858, before he became the President of US said “A house divided against itself cannot stand”.  Though the intent of Lincoln was to refer to the division of his country between slave and free states but this quotation is something which can be reflected in all aspects of human life, societies, organizations and faiths.

Today our nation is divided on all the lines I just mentioned. Whatever the situation today, we are all part and parcel of problem as well as the solution.

You have been a senator of the PPP since 1994. InshaAllah, you will complete the term in 2012 and would be one of the longest serving parliamentarians in the country. As a committed worker, you may again be nominated for a position of Senator. However, what perturbs me as a political worker and a critical supporter of the PPP as to why you are playing in the hands of elements who want the PPP to fail?

We at LUBP have been fighting against all those element who just cannot stand to see the PPP in power. Off course, these include couch/tonga politicians who can’t even win elections in their own families; ex-super bureaucrats who did nothing significant for the country when they were in positions of power; defence analysts; and our beloved media which just wants to prove that they are the movers and shakers of power politics in the country.

Having worked very closely with Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, you would know that the PPP didn’t come into power through a deal but through a ballot. It is also worth noting that post martyrdom of BB, there was no power struggle in the party nor did the party disintegrate.

Even though we are not very well organized but whoever has been the head of the party, the chain of command has held firmly under him or her.

Whoever has left the party has become a nobody. Look at the likes of Ghulam Mustafa Khar, Late Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi, Late Farooq Laghari, Hafeez Pirzada, Aftab Sherpao, Iftikhar Gilani, Iqbal Haider etc. Have they made their mark in individual politics other than winning a couple of seats in their native districts? I doubt it.

The recent decision to boycott Jang and Geo was a very appropriate decision which in my opinion should have been taken much earlier. You just cannot expect one media group to become a party against the symbol of the federation. Remember, President Zardari is the symbol of federation because he belongs to the political party that represents the federation. When someone continuously attacks President Zardari, he is attacking and trying to weaken the PPP as well as the federation of Pakistan.

Just imagine that if they succeed what will happen? Will the PPP win the next elections? The people will not vote the PPP in in case of an earlier than scheduled elections. If that happens, would you be able to stake a claim for re-election to senate in 2012? Let us be very honest that by attacking Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto and Benazir Bhutto, it was the PPP that used to suffer.

It is my suggestion that if a decision has been taken to boycott Jang and Geo, it should be honored by everyone in the Party. At the end of the day, it is a war of nerves! Whether the decision is right or wrong only time will tell. Off course, if you dissent, Jang and Geo will portray themselves to be victims on your shoulders. If you believe in principles that this decision was wrong, please resign from your position as a Senator as a mark of protest.

But let me assure you – the day you leave the PPP, these Jang and Geo would not even take you online for a beeper! Remember, this is the same group which refers to MBB a Shaheed or Shaheed Rani, in spite of the fact that they were calling her a ‘sell-out’ and ‘corrupt’ only a few hours before her assassination in December 2007.

I repeat again, “A house divided against itself cannot stand” and trust me, showing you as a dissident, the target of the pro-establishment media is the PPP and no one else.

    On Saturday, the PPP issued a show-cause notice to Sherry Rehman and suspended the basic membership of Senator Safdar Abbasi after they appeared on a local TV channel. Abbasi’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) membership was also suspended according to some reports and he had received the notification letter through e-mail. The PPP has barred its members from appearing on the television channel of a local media group or giving interviews to its Urdu and English dailies. But Mr Abbasi and Ms Rehman have complained of discriminatory treatment since other members of the PPP have appeared on the same channel in recent days but have neither been served any show-cause notice nor have they been suspended.

    The treatment meted out to Senator Abbasi can be understood — though not justified — to a certain extent. His wife, Naheed Khan, was very close to late Benazir Bhutto but after BB’s death, Ms Khan has been criticised within the party and sidelined. The Naheed Khan ‘group’ has been asking the party leadership to pursue Ms Bhutto’s murder case and to bring the perpetrators out into the light of the day. This is something that everyone in Pakistan wants. Targeting those affiliated with Ms Khan could be because they have accused the new party leadership of cronyism. The PPP leadership maintains that everything has been done according to the party’s rules.

    In the case of Sherry Rehman, former information minister, things took a turn for the worse when a violent demonstration was held outside her house in Karachi allegedly by PPP workers. They burnt Ms Rehman’s effigy and chanted slogans against her. Ms Rehman said that she “had no official communication from the party about any ban on any channel” and since the PPP is not at war with the media, she did not know something of this sort could occur. It is disconcerting to see that a party worker of Ms Rehman’s stature was treated in this manner. According to the grapevine, Prime Minister Gilani wants Ms Rehman to join his cabinet again but the manner in which President Zardari abruptly accepted her resignation and her reservations about the present set-up has led her to decline Mr Gilani’s offer. It must be said here that Ms Rehman was arguably the best PPP information minister and given her journalistic background knew how to handle the media.

    The PPP leadership seems hell bent on alienating members who have done great service for the party. It seems as if the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing in the PPP. If the PPP wants to carve out a successful future and win the upcoming local bodies polls and the next general elections, its leadership must put its house in order.

    صدر آصف علی زرداری اپنی پارٹی کے سینیٹر صفدر عباسی اور رکن قومی اسمبلی شیری رحمان سے سخت ناراض ہیں۔ دونوں کا جرم یہ ہے کہ انہوں نے میری دعوت پر جیونیوز کے پروگرام کیپٹل ٹاک میں شرکت کی۔ پیپلز پارٹی کے سیکریٹری جنرل جہانگیر بدر نے صفدر عباسی کی سینٹرل ایگزیکٹو کمیٹی کی رکنیت معطل کردی ہے اور شیری رحمان کو شو کاز نوٹس دیا ہے حالانکہ بائیکاٹ کے اعلان کے بعد وفاقی وزیر برائے پانی و بجلی راجہ پرویز اشرف سمیت متعدد وزراء اور پیپلز پارٹی کے رہنماؤں نے جیو نیوز کے کئی پروگراموں میں شرکت کی۔

    اس بائیکاٹ کے اعلان کے بعد وزیر اعظم یوسف رضا گیلانی مجھے مظفرگڑھ اور ٹھٹھہ کے سیلاب زدہ علاقوں کے دورے میں ساتھ لے کر گئے۔ اس دورے میں وفاقی وزیر اطلاعات قمر زمان کائرہ اور نوید قمر بھی موجود تھے لیکن میرے پروگرام میں شرکت پر ناراضی کا اظہار صرف صفدر عباسی اور شیری رحمان کے ساتھ کیوں کیا گیا؟

    یاد رہے کہ کچھ دن قبل جہانگیر بدر اور فوزیہ وہاب نے جنگ گروپ اور جیو نیوز کے خلاف ایک پریس کانفرنس بھی کی تھی جس میں مجھ ناچیز سمیت کئی صحافیوں کے نام لیکر ان پر یکطرفہ رپورٹنگ اور صدر زرداری کے خلاف کالم لکھنے کا الزام لگایا گیا۔ اس کے بعد پنجاب اسمبلی میں پیپلز پارٹی کی رکن عظمیٰ بخاری نے مطالبہ کیا کہ کامران خان، انصار عباسی اور حامد میر کے اثاثوں کی تحقیقات کی جائیں۔ میں نے اس مطالبہ کا خیر مقدم کیا تھا۔ شاید یہ خیر مقدم ناگوار گزرا اور اب کیپٹل ٹاک میں شرکت کو ایک جرم بنا دیا گیا ہے۔

    یہ خاکسار صدر زرداری کو یاد دلانا چاہتا ہے کہ 2002ء میں جب جیو نیوز کا آغاز ہوا تو پاکستان میں الیکٹرانک میڈیا پر اپوزیشن جماعتیں شاذ و نادر نظر آیا کرتی تھیں۔ کیپٹل ٹاک کے سب سے پہلے پروگرام میں مولانا شاہ احمد نورانی اور میر ظفر اللہ جمالی کے ہمراہ مخدوم امین فہیم کو بلایا گیا تو مشرف حکومت نے دبی دبی ناراضی کا اظہار کیا۔ دوسرے پروگرام میں قاضی حسین احمد اور اعتزاز احسن تھے۔ تیسرے پروگرام میں کنور خالد یونس کے ساتھ چوہدری نثار علی خان آئے تو محترمہ بے نظیر بھٹو نے دبئی سے فون کرکے کہا کہ کیپٹل ٹاک دراصل اپوزیشن ٹاک ہے لہٰذا آپ ”ضمیر کے قیدی“ آصف علی زرداری کی نظر بندی کے خلاف بھی آواز اٹھائیں۔ میں نے محترمہ کو صاف صاف بتایا کہ میں اپوزیشن کی آواز بننے کا کوئی ارادہ نہیں رکھتا بلکہ کوشش کروں گا کہ کیپٹل ٹاک میں حکومت اور اپوزیشن کواپنی بات کہنے کا مناسب موقع ملے اور میں دونوں سے ہر جائز سوال کروں گا۔

    یہ وہ زمانہ تھا کہ جب بمشکل تین چار ٹاک شو نشر ہوتے تھے۔ حکومت بظاہر میڈیا کی آزادی کی بڑی باتیں کرتی تھی لیکن حیلے بہانوں سے ہمارا بازو مروڑنے کی کوشش میں مصروف رہتی۔ مجھے ہر ماہ جیونیوز کی نشریات پاکستان میں دکھانے کا ایک اجازت نامہ حاصل کرنا پڑتا تھا۔ ایک دفعہ مجھے ایک بلیک لسٹ دی گئی جس میں جاوید ہاشمی، چوہدری نثار علی خان، خواجہ محمد آصف، خواجہ سعد رفیق، راجہ پرویز اشرف، قمر زمان کائرہ، شیری رحمان، صفدرعباسی، ثناء اللہ بلوچ اور عبدالرؤف مینگل کے نام تھے اور کہا گیا کہ ان میں سے کسی کو کیپٹل ٹاک میں نہیں بلایا جائے گا۔ ظاہر ہے کہ ہم نے مشرف حکومت کے اس حکم نامے کو تسلیم نہیں کیا اور کافی مشکلات کا سامنا کیا۔ 2/جون 2003ء کو میں نے آصف علی زرداری کے بارے میں ر وزنامہ جنگ میں کالم لکھا جس پر 6/جون کو مجھے محترمہ بے نظیر کا ایک طویل خط موصول ہوا، جس میں زرداری صاحب کیلئے آواز اٹھانے پر شکریہ ادا کیا گیا تھا۔ یہ وہ زمانہ تھا جب پاکستانی میڈیا میں آصف علی زرداری کو ”مردُحرّ“ قراردیا جانے لگا۔ ایک دن شیری رحمان نے کیپٹل ٹاک میں آصف علی زرداری کی رہائی کیلئے آواز اٹھائی تو اگلے دن ڈاکٹر قیوم سومرو نے راولپنڈی کی احتساب عدالت سے فون پر میری زرداری صاحب سے بات کرائی، وہ شکریہ ادا کررہے تھے کہ کیپٹل ٹاک میں ان کیلئے ”کلمئہ حق“ کہنے والوں کو مدعو کیا جا رہا ہے۔

    چند دن بعد میں انہیں ملنے احتساب عدالت پہنچا تو وہاں راجہ پرویز اشرف بھی موجود تھے۔ زرداری صاحب نے ایک دفعہ پھر شکریہ ادا کیا تو میں نے عرض کی کہ جناب آپ کچھ عرصے میں رہا ہو جائیں گے اور اگر آپ دوبارہ اقتدار میں آگئے تو آپ میڈیا کیلئے پرویز مشرف سے مختلف نہ ہوں گے۔ یہ سن کر آصف علی زرداری سنجیدہ ہوگئے اور سینے پر ہاتھ رکھ کر بولے…”میں بلوچ ہوں اور مشکل وقت میں ساتھ دینے والوں کی پیٹھ میں خنجر نہیں مارسکتا“

    میں نہیں کہتا کہ آپ نے میری یا جیو نیوز کی پیٹھ میں خنجر مارا لیکن سوچنے کی بات یہ ہے کہ جب آپ جیل میں تھے تو اس میڈیا کا رویہ آپ کے ساتھ دوستانہ تھا لیکن جب آپ حکومت میں آئے تو کچھ عرصے کے بعد یہ میڈیا آپ کے لئے ناقابل برداشت کیوں ہوگیا؟ شاید اس کی وجہ یہ ہے کہ آپ دوست اور دشمن میں فرق بھول گئے اور دوستوں کو خریدنے کی کوشش کرنے لگے۔ یہ کوئی راز نہیں کہ صدر بننے کے بعد آپ نے ایک طویل عرصے تک مجھ ناچیز سمیت نصرف جاوید اور کئی دیگر صحافیوں کا مستقبل ”سنوارنے“ کی کوشش کی ۔ جو آپ کے دام میں آگئے ان کی تباہی سب کے سامنے ہے جو بچ گئے ان سے آپ ناراض ہیں۔

    ٹھیک ہے میڈیا میں بھی کچھ خامیاں ہیں، میڈیا کو اپنی غلطیوں کا جائزہ لینا چاہئے لیکن آصف زرداری اور میڈیا کی لڑائی میں پیپلزپارٹی کو نقصان نہ پہنچایئے۔ خدارا غصہ تھوک دیجئے! صفدر عباسی اور شیری رحمان کیلئے جنرل ضیاء الحق نہ بنئے اور نہ جہانگیر بدر کو پیپلز پارٹی کا تارا مسیح بنایئے۔

    I agree to the Column about Senator Safdar Abbasi. I was watching Sunday Morning Show on GEO TV & Safdar Sb was giving telephonic interview to a Panel including Shami Sb(Pro-Establishment Journalist). I couldn’t help myself but felt sorry for Safdar Abbasi because he was perhaps thinking he was justifying himself for being served Notice by PPP, but actually he was playing in the hands of well prepared Anti-govt panel. I remember Shami Sb was saying certain things about NRO etc even mentioning late BB’s name like a prank, & Safdar Abbasi was left defending BB & the party unsuccessfully.
    Safdar Sb,,plz understand,,they(Geo, Shami etc) can never be your friends, they will only use you for their own agenda & with all ur sacrifices for the party may go down as Mir Jafer.. So pls for sake of urself & party as well as late BB,,try & solve the matters within party through discsussion & argument & stop playing in the hands of GEO/ARY etc.
    Finally,I must say that Safdar Abbasi & Naheed Khan are great assets & they should be given more respect within the party.

Give us the five years and then we can never claim wrong doing. Can you deny that Zardari is not being targeted?

    The fact which Safdar Abbasi and Naheed Khan must accept and they are reluctant to accept and I am sure will never accept is that those once considered “Giants” and very towering personalities when they were inside PPP became “Dwarfs” after leaving the party.This is what history tells us.Ethically they must leave the party if they have confrontation with the Party Chairperson to join some other party of their choice or they should make their own party to do politics on their own stature.

    Are you guys criticizing Safdar Abbasi just because he wants authorities to investigate BB’s murder case. If he wanted power he would have become yes person to zardari sahab, he often praise all the positive steps taken by the government but when he criticizes its for all right reasons! We feel ashamed when PPP and babar awan are shaking hands with mqm and qatil league’s pervaiz illahi but they are not ready to listen to dr safdar abbasi.
    people for whom some of the guys have mentioned above that they have left and now they are no where, but safdar abbasi repeatedly say he can never leave the party for which they have spent all their lives. People like Khar, Jatoi and others left party when they were struggling in martial law period, safdar abbasi is kept away when PPP is in power so there is no comparison. PPP should respect Safdar Abbasi and all other old workers otherwise it will lose the committed people. Most of the people who are in current PPP where were they when party was struggling in the musharraf’s era? So God forbid if there is any tough time they are not going to stay with zardari sahab.

    HRCP shocked by siege of Sherry’s house

    Lahore: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has expressed outrage at hundreds of armed protesters laying siege of the Karachi residence of leading journalist and politician Sherry Rehman, threatening her and harassing her family.

    A statement issued by the commission on Monday said, “HRCP protests in the strongest possible terms the demonstration of violence outside the house of Sherry Rehman and harassment of her family. Armed protestors had descended at her house apparently after she had appeared on a TV channel boycotted by the PPP.

    “Official complicity in the siege, if not downright connivance, was evident from the fact that the police stood by as armed protesters blocked the roads leading to Sherry’s residence and blocked the entrance to her house. The protestors also called her a traitor to the PPP and the country,” the statement said. “This is an unfortunate trend in a country where one does not have to look far for methods of intimidation and harassment,” the HRCP said.
