After attacking the shrine of Rehman Baba in the Khyber Pakthunkhwa, and the shrine of Data Ganj Bakhsh in Lahore, the extremist Deobandis (terrorists of the Taliban, Al Qaeda and Sipah-e-Sahaba) have now attacked the shrine of Hazrat Abdullah Shah Ghazi in Karachi. At least 10 Barelvi and Shia Muslims were killed in this attack.
Why do Deobandi Taliban kill Barelvi and Shia Muslims?
According to extremist Deobandis, both Barelvi and Shia Muslims are heretics and polytheists hence wajibul qatl (worthy to be killed). It may be noted that almost all Barelvi and Shia Muslims dislike the Taliban, Al Qaeda and Sipah-e-Sahaba because of their hate based ideology.

Who provides arms, training and protection to the Deobandi terrorists?
It may be noted that Pakistan’s spy agency (ISI) has special jihadi connections with the extremist Deobandis (often labelled as Good Taliban) unless they start attacking the GHQ.
Taliban accept responsibilty
According to international and local media, the Pakistani Taliban has claimed responsibiilty for two explosions Thursday at a shrine in Karachi in which at least eight people were killed and dozens injured.
The suicide attack was launched at the shrine of a revered Sufi Muslim saint, Abdullah Shah Ghazi, said Zulfiqar Ali Mirza, interior minister of Sindh province. Mirza has ordered the closing of Karachi shrines until further notice.
Saghir Ahmed, Sindh’s health minister, told CNN that the victims have been brought to hospitals in Karachi and 60 people are being treated for injuries. Authorities said crews were sifting through human remains at the site.
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack. “The relentless attacks on ordinary Pakistani citizens by those who want to impose an extremist mindset and lifestyle upon our country will not deter our government and the Pakistan Peoples Party,” a statement from Zardari’s office said. “We remain committed to fighting these murderers and expelling them from our land.”
The attack occurred Thursday night, the busiest time at the shrine because it’s the eve of Muslim Friday prayers. Karachi and Sindh residents make pilgrimages to the shrine to offer prayers.
Thursday night also is when people distribute free food to the poor, an act that is one of the five pillars of Islam. (Source)

Witness Gul Mohammad said he was outside the shrine when two huge blasts were heard in quick succession.
“I rushed inside and saw blood and human flesh,” he said. “Some bodies were lying on the ground and several people wounded in the blasts were crying in pain. Then ambulances started arriving and moving the injured to hospitals.”
Ambulances with sirens blaring were seen ferrying casualties to hospitals as police and paramilitary soldiers cordoned off the shrine.
There was no claim of responsibility for the latest attack but the Pakistani Taliban has been blamed for similar bombings in the past.

Who is Abdullah Shah Ghazi?
Abdullah Shah Ghazi was Syed Abu Muhammad Abdullah Al Ishtar from the lineage of the Prophet Muhammad from the linage of Imam Hasan and Imam Ali. According to historian Suhail Zaheer Lari, he was the son of Muhammad al-Nafs al-Zakiyya. He was born in Medina in the year 720 and arrived in Sindh in the year 760 as a merchant and brought with him a large number of horses purchased from Kufa, Iraq. He was given a warm welcome as he belonged to a saadat family, the noblest in Islam.
Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s shrine in Karachi is dated back to 1400 years ago, his brother, Misry Shah Ghazi, who is also buried along the coastline in Karachi, is also remembered as a saint.
Many people claim to have been granted their wishes at the shrine and it is the centre for people who throng the shrine all year round. Every year marks the Urs (festival) at the shrine for 3 days (dates: 20-22 Dhu al-Hijjah – 12th month of the Islamic calendar), marking the anniversary of Abdullah Shah Ghazi. A famous myth about the mazar is that Karachi never had a tropical disaster in a thousand year because of the shrine’s blessing.

Targeting symbols of spirituality
While religious differences have always existed, there is no longer any space for dialogue. ILLUSTRATION: ESSA MALIK
In July 2007, Pakistanis were glued to their television screens as images of the army battling armed students in Lal Masjid in Islamabad were broadcast round the clock.
A few weeks after the operation, militants started avenging those killed in the seminary.
On July 31, 2007, around 200 militants took control of Haji Baba Turangzai’s shrine in Safi tehsil in Mohmand Agency, renamed it Lal Masjid and established their own brand of Shariah courts in the area.
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) leader Omar Khalid announced: “We will continue Ghazi Abdur Rashid’s mission even if it means sacrificing our lives.”
Three years later, shrines remain susceptible targets. As recently as September 20, Akhun Salak Baba’s shrine on the outskirts of Peshawar was blown up. Over 40 people died in July in suicide attacks on Data Darbar in Lahore.
Security analyst Imtiaz Gul says that attacks on shrines are a result of the al Qaeda and TTP alliance in 2007. “This is done by people who believe in Osama bin Laden’s philosophy, [who subscribes to] the Salafi/Wahabi school of thought that rejects shrines.”
Their goal is to “demonstrate their rejection of shrines and to discourage people from visiting them.” There is another group too, however, Gul points out. These “are local criminal groups disguised as the Taliban and foreign vested interests whose aim is to destabilise Pakistan.”
Attacks on shrines are usually believed to be a result of differences among schools of Islamic thought. While Deobandis, Salafis, Ahle Hadiths and Panjpiris do not believe in shrines, Barelvis consider saints to be “their go-between to communicate with God,” says historian Mubarak Ali.
However, differences in religious point of views have always existed without translating into violence. Ali feels this is because, “at the present time, there is no space in our society for debate.”
When the Taliban took over Buner in April 2009, they first besieged Pir Baba’s shrine. Taliban leader Fateh Khan said it was because the place was a hub of “adultery and idolatry”. When the military launched a surgical strike the walls of the shrines were covered with chalkings of Jumaat Tauheed-o-Sunnah.
In Khyber Agency, Lashkar-e-Islam (LI) – which follows the Deobandi and Panjpiri creeds – is the main group involved in blowing up shrines and schools. Almost all attacks on shrines in Khyber Agency and Peshawar have been claimed by the LI. Its leader Mangal Bagh has openly vowed to carry out these attacks.
However, while a high-ranking member of the Panjpir school of thought admits that their “aim is to eradicate bidaat (excess in religion),” but he says that they do not target innocent people.
“We think that suicide attacks on shrines are actually a plan to defame Islam by Islam,” says a spokesperson for Jamaat-ud-Dawa, which follows the Ahle Hadith school of thought.
Despite heavy contingents of police at shrines – 6,500 personnel were deployed at Lal Shahbaz Qalandar’s urs this year – it is a near-impossible task to secure them. Shrines are frequented by thousands daily, provide food and are cultural symbols. Even though suicide attacks have been condemned by Deobandi and Barelvi scholars, the policemen standing guard are a sign of the ever-present threat and fear at these symbols of spirituality.

KARACHI: In the past five years alone, shrines have been blown up in Jhal Magsi and Hub in Balochistan, as well as in Peshawar, Lahore, Islamabad and Nowshera. Heightened security measures have been put into place at prominent shrines across the country, including Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s shrine in Karachi and Shah Rukne Alam in Multan.
One of the reasons cited for the number of attacks on shrines is the inspiration militant organisations have taken from different schools of religious thought.
The deobandi factor
Senator Maulana Gul Nasib of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) says: “There is a minor difference between the Deobandis and Barelvis. Some agencies are working with a policy of divide and rule … we respect graves just as others do.”
Deobandi and Wahabi groups and political parties were strongly supported during General Ziaul Haq’s era, especially to counter what the regime thought were Iran-backed Shia groups, and this has provided impetus to militant groups attacking shrines.
Students of the Deobandi Darul Uloom Haqqania in Akhora Khattak (which is run by Maulana Samiul Haq, who heads his own faction of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam) have joined the Afghan Taliban and other militant organisations.
In her 2008 book Partisans of Allah – Jihad in South Asia, Ayesha Jalal wrote: “State support for Deobandis upset the sectarian balance in the country, where Barelvis represented by the Jamiat Ulema-e-Pakistan were in the majority. Before it became an assembly line supplying jihadists for America’s covert war in Afghanistan, Pakistan was a Barelvi-Deobandi state that subscribed to the Hanafi school of jurisprudence.”
Jalal notes that “an estimated 8,000 Taliban students from Deobandi madrassas in the North West Frontier Province (now Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas were dispatched to help the Taliban fight against the Northern Alliance” after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 1996.
Pakistani governance and laws – particularly in religious matters – are more rooted in Deobandi ideology than in Barelvi, because Deobandi scholars such as Shabbir Ahmed Usmani had been key partners in the Pakistan Movement. Usmani also drafted the Objectives Resolution and Deobandi and Wahabi influence can be seen in the amendments made to the Constitution in General Ziaul Haq’s era.
Shifting mindsets
While most analyses of Pakistan claim the country is Barelvi in majority, according to a 2005 report by the International Crisis Group: “The Deobandi and Ahle Hadith have made some inroads at the expense of the Barelvi sect, with the agents of ‘internal conversions’, including the Tableeghi Jamaat and Deobandi madrassa networks. Some Deobandi leaders now claim a majority; others, such as Ajmal Qadri, believe that the ‘Barelvi and Deobandi populations are now roughly equal’. Barelvis, whose shrine culture still dominates rural Punjab and Sindh, reject these claims.”
Barelvis’ belief in shrines stems from the assimilation of the subcontinent’s cultural and social values in the school of thought, including Sufi culture, zikr and qawwalis.
Historian Mubarak Ali says it is not possible to determine whether a shift has occurred; but he says a shift in thought can be seen in urban cities. “This is because only rich and educated people can afford to become Wahabis and live that colourless life,” he says. “Those in rural areas need the culture, they have nothing else.”
But in some parts of Pakistan, such as southern Punjab, there are now reportedly thrice as many Deobandi madrassas in the province in comparison to existing Barelvi ones, which show the mushrooming of Deobandi-inspired institutions that could breed a new generation of militants.

لاہور میں داتا دربار پر ہوا خودکش حملہ پاکستان میں کسی مزار پر ہوا سب سے بڑا جان لیوا حملہ ثابت ہوا ہے۔ لاہور میں پینتیس ہلاکتوں کے مقابلے میں اس سے قبل اسلام آباد کے قریب بری امام کے مزار پر خودکش حملے میں بیس افراد ہلاک ہوئے تھے۔
پانچ مارچ سال دو ہزار نو
صوبہ خیبر پختونخواہ کے دارالحکومت پشاور کے مضافات میں چمکنی کے علاقے میں نامعلوم افراد نے مزار کے ستونوں کے ساتھ دھماکہ خیز مواد رکھ کر پشتو کے مشہور صوفی شاعر رحمان بابا کے مزار کو تباہ کر دیا۔ اس مزار کے چوکیدار کے مطابق اسے تین روز قبل فون پر دھمکی ملی تھی کہ مزار پر عورتوں کے آنے جانے کو روکا جائے ورنہ۔۔۔۔
چھ مارچ سال دو ہزار نو
نوشہرہ میں واقع بہادر بابا کے مزار کو نامعلوم افراد نے بموں سے نقصان پہنچایا۔ تاہم کوئی جانی نقصان نہیں ہوا۔
گیارہ مئی سال دو ہزار نو
خیبر ایجنسی میں لنڈی کوتل سب ڈویژن میں مقبول پشتو شاعر امیر حمزہ خان شنواری کے مزار کی بیرونی دیوار کو دھماکہ خیز مواد سے اڑا دیا گیا۔
مارچ سال دو ہزار آٹھ
پشاور سے ملحق قبائلی علاقے خیبر ایجنسی میں سرگرم لشکر اسلام نے صوبائی دارالحکومت کے قریب شیخان کے علاقے میں چار سو سال پرانا ابو سید بابا کا مزار تباہ کرنے کی کوشش ناکام بنانے کے دوران جھڑپ میں دس افراد ہلاک کر دئے تھے۔
اکتیس جولائی سال دوہزار سات
قبائلی علاقے مہمند ایجنسی میں شدت پسندوں نے اسلام آباد میں لال مسجد آپریشن کے بعد برطانوی سامراج کے خلاف لڑنے والے حریت پسند حاجی صاحب تورنگزئی کے مزار پر قبضہ کر لیا۔ صدر مقام غلنئی سے پچیس کلومیٹر شمال میں اس مزار اور اسے قریب مسجد کو شدت پسندوں نے لال مسجد کا نام دے دیا تھا۔ کئی روز تک جاری رہنے والا یہ قبضہ بعد میں شدت پسند پرامن طور پر ختم کر دیا۔

عبدالشکور ملنگ بابا کے مزار کو دھماکے سے نقصان پہنچایا گیا تاہم کوئی جانی نقصان نہیں ہوا۔
دو ہزار پانچ
وفاقی دارالحکومت اسلام آباد میں معروف بری امام کے مزار پر پانچ روزہ سالانہ عرس کے اختتامی دن ایک خودکش حملے میں بیس افراد ہلاک جبکہ درجنوں زخمی ہوئے تھے۔ اس کے بعد سے سکیورٹی کو وجہ بتا کر آج تک مقامی انتظامیہ نے عرس کی اجازت نہیں دی ہے۔ یہ مزار سنی اور شعیہ دونوں میں مقبول ہے اور ملک بھر سے عقیدت مند یہاں آتے ہیں۔
شدت پسندوں کا ہدف گزشتہ برسوں میں محض صوفی مزار نہیں رہے بلکہ بعض کے گدی نشینوں نے بھی جان کھوئی ہے۔ تکفیری سوچ و نظریات کے حامل ان شدت پسندوں کو ان سیاسی و سماجی مقبولیت پانے والے گدی نشینوں کا بھی دشمن بنا دیا۔
خیبر ایجنسی میں منگل باغ کے لشکر اسلام نے سال دو ہزار آٹھ میں پیر سیف الرحمان کو شدید جھڑپوں کے بعد علاقہ بدر کر دیا تھا۔ ان کے علاقے سوات کے گدی نشین پیر سمیع اللہ کو دسمبر میں شدت پسندوں کے خلاف لشکر کشی کے بعد ایک جھڑپ میں ہلاک کر دیا گیا۔ ان کی لاش کو بھی بعد میں قبر سے نکال کر مینگورہ کے ایک چوراہے پر لٹکا دیا گیا تھا۔
ضلع جھل مگسی میں فتح پور کے مقام پر ایک مزار پر حملے میں تیس سے زائد افراد ہلاک ہوئے تھے۔ اس وقت کے صوبائی پولیس سربراہ نے اس حملے کی ذمہ داری کالعدم سپاہ صحابہ پر ڈالی تھی اور اس کے چند مبینہ اراکین گرفتار بھی کیے۔

And while the Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan and the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi stand officially disbanded, their most militant son and leader, Maulana Azam Tariq, an accused in several cases of sectarian killing, contested elections from jail – albeit as an independent candidate – won his seat, and was released on bail shortly thereafter. Musharraf rewrote election rules to disqualify former Prime Ministers Mohammed Nawaz Sharif and Benazir Bhutto, and threatened to toss them in jail if they returned from abroad, which badly undermined both Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League and Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Musharraf has plainly given the religious groups more free rein in the campaign than he has allowed the two big parties that were his main rivals. In Jhang city, in Punjab province, Maulana Azam Tariq, leader of an outlawed extremist group called Sipah-e-Sahaba, which has been linked to numerous sectarian killings, is being allowed to run as an independent�despite election laws that disqualify any candidate who has criminal charges pending, or even those who did not earn a college degree. “It makes no sense that Benazir can’t run in the election,” says one Islamabad-based diplomat, “and this nasty guy can.”
References: And this takes me back to Pervez Musharraf’s first visit to the US after his coup. At a meeting with a group of journalists among whom I was present, my dear and much lamented friend Tahir Mirza, then the Dawn correspondent, asked Musharraf why he was not acting against Lashkar-e Tayba and Jaish-e Muhammad. Musharraf went red in the face and shot back, “They are not doing anything in Pakistan. They are doing jihad outside.”

Gen. Zia chose Gen. Musharraf (then a Brigadier) in 1987 to command a newly-raised Special Services Group (SSG) base at Khapalu in the Siachen area. To please Gen. Zia, Gen. Musharraf with his SSG commandos launched an attack on an Indian post at Bilfond La in September, 1987,and was beaten back. Despite this, he continued to enjoy the confidence of Zia.
Gen. Musharraf has since then spent seven years in two tenures with the SSG and prides himself on being an SSG commando and projects himself as the greatest expert of the Pakistan Army in mountain warfare. When he recently received Gen. Anthony Zinni, the Commanding Officer of the US Central Command, he was dressed as an SSG Commando. In May,1988, the Shias, who are in a majority in Gilgit, rose in revolt against the Sunni-dominated administration. Zia put an SSG group commanded by Gen. Musharraf in charge of suppressing the revolt. Gen. Musharraf transported a large number of Wahabi Pakhtoon tribesmen from the NWFP and Afghanistan, commanded by bin Laden, to Gilgit to teach the Shias a lesson. These tribesmen under bin Laden massacred hundreds of Shias. In its issue of May,1990, “Herald”, the monthly journal of the “Dawn” group of publications of Karachi, wrote as follows: ” In May,1988, low-intensity political rivalry and sectarian tension ignited into full-scale carnage as thousands of armed tribesmen from outside Gilgit district invaded Gilgit along the Karakoram Highway. Nobody stopped them. They destroyed crops and houses, lynched and burnt people to death in the villages around Gilgit town. The number of dead and injured was put in the hundreds. But numbers alone tell nothing of the savagery of the invading hordes and the chilling impact it has left on these peaceful valleys.” Gen. Musharraf started a policy of bringing in Punjabis and Pakhtoons from outside and settling them down in Gilgit and Baltistan in order to reduce the Kashmiri Shias to a minority in their traditional land and this is continuing till today. The “Friday Times” of October 15-21, 1992, quoted Mr. Muhammad Yahya Shah, a local Shia leader, as saying: ” We were ruled by the Whites during the British days. We are now being ruled by the Browns from the plains. The rapid settling-in of Punjabis and Pakhtoons from outside, particularly the trading classes, has created a sense of acute insecurity among the local Shias.” Zia became the first victim of the carnage unleashed by Gen. Musharraf on the Shias of Gilgit. Though the Pakistani authorities have not released the report of the committee, which enquired into the crash of Zia’s plane in August,1988, it is widely believed in Pakistan that a Shia airman from Gilgit, wanting to take revenge for the May,1988, carnage, was responsible for the crash.
In 1988, there was a violent uprising of the Shias in Gilgit, which was ruthlessly suppressed by Musharraf, who was given the task of dealing with the revolt by Zia-ul-Haq. Musharraf had a large number of Sunni Pashtun tribesmen from the Federally-Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) led by Osama bin Laden brought into Gilgit. They carried out a massacre of the Shias in the NA as well as the adjoining NWFP areas. It is believed by many in Pakistan that the crash of the aircraft in which Zia was travelling from Bahawalpur in August 1988 resulting in his death was caused by a Shia airman from Gilgit sympathetic to the TJP in retaliation for this massacre. To keep the Shias of Gilgit under control, Musharraf encouraged the the SSP, which had come into existence in the Punjab in the early 1980s at the instance of the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), to extend its activities amongst the Sunni population of Gilgit and to politically organise them against the the TJP. ISLAMABAD: One of the top security agencies on Wednesday picked up Raja Ehsan Aziz, a member of Tehrik-e-Islami (TI), for his alleged connections with terrorists who had attacked the Parade Lane Mosque in Rawalpindi and Moon Market in Lahore. Tehrik-e-Islami is a splinter group of the JI. Two female members of the Tehrik have already been taken into custody. Sarwat Wahid, another female member whose son’s car was used in the Parade Lane Mosque attack, is missing. Also her son, Jawad, who was studying in Faisalabad after doing A Level from Beacon House School System, is missing. Aziz, a graduate of Columbia University who also served on senior positions at the Foreign Office, is a retired professor of International Relations, Quaid-i-Azam University. His elder son is an Army doctor. Aziz was taken away from his house in G/10-3 on Wednesday evening by sleuths of the Counter-Terrorism Cell, his wife Amira Aziz told The News. Amira, an ex-MNA of Jamaat-e-Islami and now a Shura member of the Tehrik, is a religious scholar and writes columns in an Urdu daily. Aziz’s driver, Phool Zeb from Nowshera, has already been arrested as investigators found a mobile SIM allegedly used for conversation during the attacks on the Parade Lane Mosque and Moon Market, was issued in his name. Likewise, the car used in the mosque attack belonged to Jawad, the son of a Tehrik-e-Islami woman, Sarwat Wahid, a resident of I-8 Sector, Islamabad. Both of them are missing since then. Likewise, Aziz’ son, Omer, a student of Islamic International University, has not returned home for the last five days.
Aziz has been picked up for the second time, his wife said, denying any links of the family with terrorism incidents. “I’m a sworn enemy of America and can pay any price for it but I strongly oppose terrorism within Pakistan,” Amira Aziz told The News. She said the intelligence operatives had been following the women activists of Tehrik-e-Islami for the last six months and harassed them. She alleged that her husband was beaten black and blue when picked up last time and kept in illegal custody for a night. Amira said her son, Omer, a heart patient, was very upset when intelligence guys kept his father in their custody for a night. A female member of Tehrik, Najma Sana, who lives in G-9/1, is already in the agency’s custody for the last 10 days. Sarwat Wahid, after being chased by the intelligence agency, left Islamabad for Karachi where she was again pursued by the police. Her sister and children in Karachi have been arrested to press for recovery of Sarwat who has gone underground there. Sarwat’s son, Jawad, is also missing. Tahira Mumtaz, another female member of the Tehrik, was twice called for investigation over her alleged assistance to Sarwat to flee the capital. Altaf Aziz Khattack, SHO, said he was not aware of any such incident. He asked this correspondent to take up the matter with the R A Bazaar police in whose jurisdiction the mosque was attacked. There’s a war going on in Pakistan; in the mountains and in the cities. A war enforced upon the people of the country by monsters that we have created ourselves. The enemy in this respect is clearly visible and yet we want to continue treating it like an elusive ghost.
Its targets are now obvious. But we dare not name them. But today, I will. These targets are those Pakistanis who have vigorously contributed in making Pakistan what it really used to be: a temperate, promising conglomerate of various ethnicities, religions and Muslim sects.
The Sunni Barelvis, the Shias, the Christians, the Hindus and the Ahmadis – they are all under attack in their places of worship and shrines. They are being attacked in the most remorseless manner by a rare, violent breed of animals that uncannily look like human beings but are nothing like them.
The suicide blasts yesterday (October 7) at Karachi’s revered Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine in Clifton, is yet another reminder of the war each one of us faces. This attack will be thoroughly covered by the media, however, soon we will go back to lamenting the ‘barbarity of the US drone attacks,’ the ‘injustice faced by qaum ki beti’ Madam Aafia, and what glorious words that idiot, Faisal Shahzad, spouted at his sentencing …
If – as mindless babblers like Imran Khan, Hamid Gul, Zaid Hamid, right-wing anchors,investigative journalists and other such media fodder for reactionary whiplash would suggest – these inhuman assaults take place due to the drone attacks, I want to ask, exactly how many handlers and planners of these drones were present in all the mosques, shrines and bazaars that have been attacked by these monsters?
These babblers and the media feed us nonsense and we submissively accept it. These monsters keep maiming and murdering us by the hundreds, and all we can do is point towards the skies looking for the drones (that actually manage to eliminate many of these bloody brutes); or of course, within days it’s back to playing the confused ostriches or worse, paranoid hyperboles, loudly taking the roll call of the usual, imaginary suspects: India, Israel or the US
Just wait, one fine day you will also be able to see names like China and Iran on that sheet that is read and repeated ad nauseum. Yes sir, anything and anyone, but us.

Shah Ghazi is known by Karachiites as the city’s patron saint. According to tradition he arrived from Iraq in the eighth century to preach the kind of tolerant, pluralistic and empathetic Islam that the region has known for centuries.
His is the kind of faith that the so-called puritanical ogres scoff at and want to literally blow to pieces; a faith that the many otherwise ‘respectable-looking’ apologists of these monsters running amok on TV screens tell us is ‘wrong’ and ‘impure’.
They tell us it’s all a diabolical conspiracy against our faith and country. A conspiracy by the wretched Hindus, scheming Jews and of Western countries that are ironically visited quite frequently by this vivacious gung-ho gang of armchair and TV studio politicians, journalists and ‘experts’.
An implausible narrative is formed and gleefully peddled, as media men comment on the issue as if reading from a script of a bad James Bond movie, or a thrilling Ibn-i-Safi novel, in which fantastical plots are hatched by evil geniuses and dotty synchronistic connections made by the daring heroes.
Had the animated, hyperbolic weaver of epic tales about Muslim conquerors, Naseem Hijazi, been alive today, he would have made a great TV anchor/ ‘security analyst!’

Karachi has been evading the curse of the kind of delusion that feeds these blood-thirsty ogres and their shameless, populist defenders. The evasion maybe coming to an end, but not if the three main political parties of the city and Sindh remain in the kind of petty squabbles they’ve been indulging in lately.
There is no doubt that it is the coalition of MQM, PPP and ANP that has kept Karachi saner and safer compared to the madness faced in this context by the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Punjab.
Sure, these parties have been a failure to reign in their respective anarchic renegades out on a targeted killing spree, but the consensus against psychotic extremists remains the strongest in Karachi and Sindh.
MQM (perhaps the toughest bulwark in Karachi against violent religious fanatics), I am afraid will have to cut short its sudden admiration of Madam Aafia; PPP will have to stop negating its own tough talk against extremism by indulging in populist, empty sloganeering; and the ANP (that has suffered so much at the hands of the faithful psychos in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) must stop ridiculing MQM’s concerns of the possibility of some Taliban gathering in disguise in the city’s Pashtun areas.
The Pakistani people, politicians and army have all suffered deaths and great tragedies in this war. But despite so much carnage and terror, Pakistanis are still looking for contrived and utterly convoluted answers that are readily given to them by the media and the small, manic political parties.
They are doing so because many of us are terrified of a simpler, to-the-point truth: these monsters are not only amidst us, but they are from among us!
If this nation has braved through so much terror and madness, then why do we continue to hide in fear from this one vital truth. We must realise that without owning up to this truth, this country will never be able to rid itself from the blood-soaked quagmire it has gotten itself into.

Whatever happens at shrines is Islamic and spiritual according to those who believe in Sufi traditions. You must stop enforcing your sect on others.

Minor correction is needed because Dr Zakir Naik is not deobandi , he is Ahl-e-Hadith and minus Taqi, Rafi and Mufti Naeem all the others mentioned are basically Jamatis [followers of Hanafi School of Thought] tilted towards Mawdudiyat.

If one want to know Allah then one must read Quran – and help poor people and that is it. I have found worst kind of “Riyakar” [Showoffs] amongst Ahl-e-Silsila Frauds. I know your problem and its natural that you want all Muslim to be united under the banner of Alleged Single Ummah so you want to keep everyone happy and this doesn’t happen. Thursday evening’s suspected suicide attack on the revered mausoleum of Abdullah Shah Ghazi in Karachi was not the first time extremists have targeted a Sufi shrine in Pakistan.
At least nine people, including children, were killed while scores were injured as a result of the twin blasts, believed to have been carried out by as many suicide bombers. Considering the mass of humanity that gathers at the shrine on Thursday nights, it is a miracle the number of dead was not greater. The attack bore a disturbing resemblance to July’s bombing of Data Darbar in Lahore, which also targeted devotees gathered on a Thursday evening. Though there were incidents of violence in the city, thankfully the situation did not spin out of control.
There are strong suspicions that the TTP is responsible for this latest outrage. The TTP has evolved into a conglomerate that serves as a platform for a number of violent jihadi and virulently sectarian militant groups. As per the militants’ philosophy, attacking anything that falls within their definition of ‘unbelief’ is perfectly kosher: western targets, the Pakistan Army as well as security agencies and Shias top this list. Moderate Sunnis, specifically of the Barelvi persuasion, are recent additions to the list of ‘enemies’. In fact, anything that serves as a symbol of Islamic interpretations beyond the narrow confines of the extremist canon is a legitimate target. That is why Ashura, Chehlum and Eid Miladun Nabi processions, Shia rallies and Sufi shrines are all fair game. Hard-liners have never had any love for Sufi shrines as they regard them as carrying the vestiges of polytheism. Yet the opposition to them has taken a very bloody turn, since it is now actually okay to destroy them. The attacks on Data Darbar and Rehman Baba’s tomb as well as Thursday’s incident all point to this.
In the context of Karachi, several conflicts are already brewing in the metropolis. Apart from the ethnic, political and sectarian fault-lines, a new front seems to have opened up in the city: that of intra-sectarian conflict. This has pit a minority of extremist Sunni outfits against moderate groups of the same persuasion. The attack on Abdullah Shah Ghazi’s shrine appears to have links with this emerging conflict. In the aftermath of the bombing, the Sindh administration has said that all shrines in the city shall be closed until new security arrangements are put in place. Hopefully, this will happen soon as closing shrines and preventing devotees from visiting them is not the answer. It sends the wrong message and gives the extremists what they want. Ultimately, it is the state’s duty to provide protection to its citizens.

Two suspected ‘target killers’ arrested

KARACHI: Police arrested two suspected in connection with ongoing target killings in Karachi from Orangi Town on Sunday.
Speaking to the media in Karachi, CCPO Karachi Fayyaz Leghari said that the suspect, named Naseem Firoon and his accomplices were involved in the target killing of doctors and belonged to banned militant organisation Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.
The CCPO also revealed that the arrested men were planning an attack on an Ahmadi worship place in Karachi.
Banned militant organistations have been linked to target killings in Karachi, with a Crime Investigation Department (CID) report regarding terrorism in Sindh stating that out of 246 terrorists apprehended between August 2001 and May 2010, 94 belong to the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, 12 to the Sipah-e-Sahaba, 40 to the Harkatul Mujahideen al Alami, 36 to the Tehreeke- Taliban Pakistan/al Qaeda.
The National Assembly in September adopted a unanimous resolution asking the government to take ‘pragmatic steps’ in order to control target killings in parts of the country, especially Karachi.
