The warrior who became a martyr – by Shehzad Saleem
(Written on the Martyrdom of Dr Muhammad Farooq Khan)
He lived like an undaunted warrior and died the death of a martyr. For the past few years, he gallantly stared death in its eyes as he continued to vehemently condemn terrorism and militancy. Death threats could not swerve him from his stance and he would seldom pay heed to voices beckoning him to exercise care and caution. And then, the inevitable happened. He was shot at when he was busy seeing his patients at his clinic in Mardan on October the 2nd and could not survive the bullet wounds. His face still wore that typical beam – his vintage hallmark well known to all those who knew him – when he lay enshrouded before his burial.
Dr Muhammad Farooq Khan had a multi-faceted personality and was a man of immense reserves of energy. Truly, a man larger than life, he stood like a rock for all what he believed. He was an Islamic scholar, intellectual and a political activist; he hosted many TV programs and also made several appearances as a guest speaker on private and public TV channels; he was a fiery speaker and also authored almost a dozen books on the Islamic thought; above all he was a humane and a humble person: as a psychiatrist, he served the medical profession with exemplary zeal and dedication. His website www.drfarooqkhan.com sheds light on his life and works.
He was a firm believer in open dialogue and debate with all those who held contesting opinions. Unfortunately, his adversaries resorted to foul instead of fair play. When they could not silence him with their threats, they silenced him with their guns – a tragic yet enviable end to this warrior who is now a martyr. fare thee well!

Suna hai janglon ka bhi koi dastoor hota hai
Suna hai sher ka jub pet bhar jaaye
to woh hamla nahi kerta
darkhtoN ki ghani chauN main ja ker let jaata hai
Hawa ke tez jhonke jub darkhtoN ko hilate hain
to maina apne bacche chor ke
kawwe ke andon ko paron se tham leti hai
Suna hai ghonsle se koi bachha gir pare to
sara jangal jaag jaata hai
Suna hai jub kisi naddi ke paani main
baye ke ghonsle ka gandumi saaya larzta hai
to naddi ki rupehli machlian use parosi maan leti hain
Koi toofan aa jaaye koi pul toot jaaye
to kisi lakri ke takhte per
ghilari, saanp, bakri aur cheetah saath hote hain
Suna hai janglon ka bhi koi dastoor hota hai
Khuda wanda, jaleel-o-mautabar,
daana-o-beena, munseef-o-akbar
mere is shahr main
ab janglon hi ka koi qanoon naafiz ker
Suna hai janglon ka bhi koi dastoor hota hai

an excerpt from the ziarat of Imam Hussain (a.s.):
…curse of Allah be on those who killed you,
curse of Allah be on those who oppressed you,
curse of Allah be on the people who came to know and approved.
A friend of mine told me that about a year ago Gen. Hamid Gul sent a message to Dr Farooq through a former V.C. of the University of Peshawar ( most likely Dr Abdula Mateen Khan-TAS) asking Dr Farooq to shut his mouth and stop speaking the truth. On getting the messsage, Dr Farooq smiled and said, ” Who can give me guarantee that I would not die after stopping speaking the truth”. Dr Farooq then asked the emissary to convey to Gen Gul that
” Dr Farooq would prefer death with a bullet of ISI than dying of cold or flue”.

To lose people like Dr. Farooq who present a rational and modern perspective of the Islamic beliefs and can expose and separate the extremities introduced and promoted by the mainstream ulema is a great great loss. There are few like him, despite the fact that it’s people like him that we need the most.
