Salman Taseer murder case: Let’s have some real fun -by Waseem Altaf

As the proceedings of the Salaman Taseer murder case are underway at Adyala Central Jail, the son of the late governor Mr.Shahryar Taseer recorded his statement before the judge on Saturday, the 9th of July 2011.

The judge of the defendant Mumtaz Qadri, namely advocate Mohammad Rafiq asked Shahryar about the number of his late father’s wives. He also asked about Salman’s marriage with a Sikh lady. A number of other questions about the personal life and marital relations of Salman Taseer were also put forth before his son.

It’s a case where the accused committed murder in front of dozens of eyewitnesses. He also proudly confesses to the crime, yet the court proceedings are centered on his marital life. The case has also been adjourned.

Meanwhile scores of Sunni Tehrik activists gathered outside the prison and chanted slogans in favor of Mumtaz Qadri in a bid to harass the judge.

The judge Syed Pervez Ali Shah of the anti-terrorist court might have a 5 year old daughter and an 8 year old son. He would never want that one day he discovers their dead bodies lying on the roadside with their throats slit. However this so called State would not protect him and his family. The bearded goons would keep raising slogans outside the prison to intimidate him but no state machinery would come forward against the mullahs. He might also be trying to get himself transferred, and as long as he does not succeed, he would keep on adjourning the case.

Is there a practicable solution to this problem? A solution whereby

a) a judgment is pronounced

b) the skin of the judge is saved

c) the molvis feel satisfied

d) the family of Salman Taseer do not feel discriminated against

Yes it is possible to come up with such a solution:

The judge should pass a verdict in favor of Mumtaz Qadri and declare that what he did was the right thing to do. And a person perceived as a blasphemer deserves the same treatment.

Hence the judge would be able to discharge his duty and save himself too. The molvis would feel satisfied over the verdict and what would follow, will also give some solace to the family of late Salman Taseer. The land mark judgment would entail some groundbreaking results:

a) Those who perceive others as blasphemers would settle their own scores and others would make their own arrangements to counter them.

b) Right and wrong would be settled on the streets and not in phony courthouses.

c) We would also be able to do away with our treacherous criminal justice system.

d) And finally precious time energy and resources would be saved when nobody would look towards the insidious State for any security arbitration and justice.

As we move forward ,everybody in the holy land would have a party, fireworks and some real fun.
